Responsibilities
An Interventional Pulmonary/Thoracic Surgery Advanced Practice Provider will work in collaboration with a Physician/Surgeon/group of consulting providers predominantly in the outpatient setting that specialize in the management of non-cardiac thoracic diseases. This may include managing patients with complex, acute, critical and chronic conditions.
The position will collect and assist in the interpretation of reports from diagnostic and laboratory tests, radiographic procedures and clinical studies. The position will analyze, compare and evaluate various courses of action and has the authority to make independent decisions on matters of significance, free from immediate direction, within the scope of their responsibilities. In general, the Advanced Practice Provider exercises autonomy in medical decision-making and is responsible for diagnosing and treating patients in collaboration with physician colleagues. Providing a broad range of diagnostic and therapeutic services to adult patients with a variety of thoracic disorders

The primary work setting for this position is variable and could include both inpatient and outpatient clinical work.
Inpatient clinical work can include:
- Inpatient consultation and follow up
- Orders, obtains and interprets appropriate diagnostic tests.
- Pre-procedure H&Ps and consents
- Assisting in bronchoscopic and bedside ICU procedures
- Participates in procedure based clinical trials
- Patient and family member education
- Communicates plan of care with the multidisciplinary team including appropriate providers, nursing staff, and case management.
Outpatient clinical work can include:
- New patient and return clinic visit consultations
- Pre-procedure/Pre-op clinic evaluation
- Designs, orders and documents appropriate treatment plans/plans of care including prescriptions of medications based on comprehensive review of HPI and diagnostic results.
- Evaluates and preforms POCUS, thoracentesis, small bore chest tube placement and removal, surgical site wound care, and blood draws.
- Presenting patients at multidisciplinary tumor board discussions
- Lung cancer screening/ Smoking Cessation/ Pulmonary nodule program
- Research/ Database collection
- Patient and family member education
- Promotes understanding of specialty service lines not only internally, but to external referral entities as well as promotes community education and outreach.
Requirements
CERTIFICATION AND LICENSURE REQUIREMENTS
- Graduation for an accredited NP or PA program. Must be approved to practice as a Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant in the state of Maryland. Current prescriptive privileges and DEA license required. BLS and ACLS for Healthcare Provider from AHA required.
- Nurse Practitioner:Master’s Degree or Doctorate of Nursing Practice required. License to practice as a Registered Nurse required. Certification in practice from a nationally recognized certifying body required. ACNP, AGACNP certification required.
- Physician Assistant:Graduate from an accredited Physician Assistant program required; Master’s Degree required. Certification from the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants required.
- Graduation for an accredited NP or PA program. Must be approved to practice as a Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant in the state of Maryland. Current prescriptive privileges and DEA license required. BLS and ACLS for Healthcare Provider from AHA required.
- REQUIRED AREAS OF MEDICINE
- Interventional Pulmonary/Thoracic Surgery
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Ability to work with minimal supervision and as part of a collaborative team is required.
- Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills are required.
- Minimum 5 years required as a practicing APP.
- Minimum 3 years experience in performing and/or assisting in pulmonary procedures is required.
- Minimum 3 years experience required within a thoracic/interventional pulmonary service line. Primarily day shift position but may require occasional weekend/holiday obligations.
- Understand billing and coding from APP standpoint in regulation with state guidelines
