Overview Plans, directs, coordinates and evaluates the operational, fiscal and personnel activities to ensure the provision of high quality, safe patient/family centered care 24 hours a day. Advocates for and allocates available resources to promote efficient, effective, safe and compassionate nursing care. Responsibilities Manages the hiring process to meet anticipated staffing needs. Plans adequate staffing and adjustments in alignment with patient volume and clinical needs. Evaluates and manages the performance of staff members, to include coaching and the performance management processes. Manages the matrix relationships, including but not limited to providing input and feedback to Nurse Educators, Clinical Nurse Specialists, and Clinical Nurse Leaders assigned to the practice area, to ensure clinical competency of staff, quality of patient/family centered care and professional development of clinical staff. Identifies opportunities for best practices and continued improvement and oversees implementation of such practices. Responsible for operationalizing best practices in team care coordination. Coaches clinical nurses in professional development and engagement in the Program for Advancing Clinical Excellence (PACE) credentialing program. Assures that Joint Commission and other applicable regulatory standards are met in the clinical area. Assures that evidenced based practice and nursing practice standards are achieved in the clinical area. Overview Our Emergency Department unit has 43 beds staffed by RN’s, LPN’s, Paramedics, EMT’s, and LNA’s. We are the only Level 1 Trauma Center in the state of NH and work closely with our system affiliates to accept patients requiring critical/neurological/cardiac/obstetrical/medical or trauma care. Our unit sees a large volume of referrals, transfers and trauma consults from outside facilities, and provides services for the local community. We see 31,000 patients annually to include neonates through geriatric populations in various states of health, often times with multiple diseases processes. Our nurses are trained for resuscitation, acute care, outpatient care, trauma care, mental health and are proceduralists delivering bedside moderate sedation. A typical day for a nurse would involve assisting in a fracture reduction for an adult skier injury, caring for a pediatric patient with uncontrolled asthma, managing a homeless victim found unresponsive in the snow in need of resuscitation, and caring for a cardiac arrest or stroke victim. Emergency Nursing is a specialized area of practice that is both independent and collaborative, requiring the continual acquisition and application of a specialized body of knowledge and skills. This demands a broad scope of practice to promptly deliver emergency, urgent, and non-urgent care to patients of all ages and from all cultural backgrounds. Emergency nursing care is episodic, primary, and typically acute, but may be chronic in nature requiring knowledge and skills to care for patients of all ages, acuities, and physical or psychological conditions. Overview Perioperative 101 Program (August start date) Operating Room, Medical Center, Main Campus This position is for the Periop 101 program, a 9-month program for nurses combining Association of peri-Operative Registered Nurses (AORN) approved online didactic learning with clinical skills labs and experiences in the Operating Room. It is a Full-time, benefited position. The Main OR operates 26 operating room suites and is dedicated to providing care for adult and pediatric patients (Thoracic, General, GYN, urology, Plastics, ENT, Eyes, Orthopedics, Cardiac, Vascular, Neuro and Transplant), to include trauma. Typical schedule is 10 hour shifts to include call for Holidays (Note the first 9 weeks will be 8 hour days). The ultimate goal of the Operating Room is to provide the right care in the right place and the right time for our patients who seek our surgical services. The program begins with participation in selected Periop Orientation offerings, which are integrated with Perioperative Nursing content. Upon successful completion of the didactic portion of training, the nurse is paired with a mentor in the circulating role for a designated period of time. Following this, the nurse spends time in each of the surgical specialties offered at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center before choosing a surgical service in which to specialize their nursing practice. Retention Bonus for commitment of 2 years following completion of training period. (paid in installments) Responsibilities The program starts on August 17, 2026 for New Grads and August 31, 2026 for Experienced nurses. All accepted applicants are required to successfully pass the New Hampshire N-CLEX Exam for RN's prior to their start date. No accepted applicants will be allowed to enroll unless they are licensed as a registered nurse in New Hampshire. Experienced nurses looking to change tracks to the Operating Room should also apply. Participants in this program pay no fee, but they are paid full salary and benefits during this program. This DHMC commitment to the participants in this program is balanced with a commitment from each student to work full-time for two years in the operating room at DHMC upon successful completion of the program. The program is concentrated mainly on the circulator role. The operating room is a physically demanding, high stress environment. Exposure to blood and body fluids, communicable diseases, chemicals, radiation, and repetitive motions is a possibility. Physical requirements include: Full range of body motion including handling and lifting patients, pushing and pulling heavy objects, standing and walking for extensive periods of time, lifting and carrying items weighing up to 50 pounds, corrected vision and hearing to within normal range, manual and finger dexterity, hand and eye coordination, and working irregular hours including call hours. Overview The Circulating RN Works collaboratively with Surgical Team to ensure patient safety and positive patient outcomes. Monitor Surgical cases for continued sterility, and support surgical team from outside the sterile field. Thorough and complete intra-operative documentation, as well as case set up and preparation. This specialty works while adhering to AORN standards and practices. Call schedule (after training is complete) for overbook and emergent cases only and at a small critical access hospital with two OR’s and one endoscopy suite. Variable days into evening M-F with no holiday or weekend regular hours. Responsibilities General Clinical Practice Utilizes the nursing process in caring for all patients, to include: assessing symptoms, planning interventions, implementing treatment plans, evaluating responses to interventions, and revising plan based on overall effectiveness. Demonstrates the skills necessary to provide individualized care to the population served. Adheres to the established practice standards and procedures at New London Hospital, regarding the administration of all medications and patient care activities. Makes knowledgeable decisions in consideration of the facts and the disease/surgical condition utilizing critical thinking. Evaluates the patient’s response to the nursing and/or medical regimen and reassesses and revises plan of care, as necessary. Documents care provided using hospital standards. Provides education to patients and families based on assessment of learning needs. Participates in interdisciplinary planning. Creates and monitors patient environment to ensure it is safe and free from hazards. Performs all aspects of patient care in an environment that optimizes patient safety and reduces the likelihood of medical/health care errors. Assists in minor procedures, as requested. Specialty Clinical Practice OR Circulating Demonstrates competence in the principle and practice of surgical asepsis, surgical hand scrub, appropriate gowning and gloving, nursing responsibilities for conscious sedation according to training, and sterilization, disinfection, preparation, packaging and storing of surgical instruments and supplies. Demonstrates competence the use of special equipment, positioning tables or chairs, electrocautery, insufflation, tourniquet, cameras, warming units, thromboembolic prevention, and microscope. Carries out care according to AORN/ASPAN Recommended Standards of Practice. Advocates for patient throughout the continuum of surgical care and brings up any concerns re: patient safety, positioning needs, surgical attire or sterility of the field. Follows the Standards of Practice established for the Surgical Services Department. Documents surgical events according to facility standards including but not limited to event times, staff members in or out of room, positioning, asepsis and site prep, instrument and supply counts, specimens gathered, implants and explants Cleans environment as training before, during, after cases and at beginning and end of shifts as per AORN guidelines Adheres to surgical attire according to AORN and ensure visitors are following these guidelines. Qualifications Graduate from Accredited nursing program with Associate Degree, BSN preferred. Minimum 1 yr. med/surg. or critical care nursing experience preferred. Previous OR experience a plus. Will train according to AORN guidelines in conjunction with AORN Peri-Op 101 Program modules and a precepting RN. Certificate of completion from AORN Peri-Op 101 program within one year of hire.
