General Summary

  • The Surgical Technologist is a professional caregiver who works with Anesthesia, surgeons, and other surgical personnel in patient care before, during and after surgery. The Surgical Technologist uses sterile technique and technical equipment to perform surgical procedures.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assists with surgical procedures (C-sections) in Labor & Delivery operating room. Anticipates surgical team needs, and demonstrates dexterity.
  • Uses, cleans and cares for surgical instruments and equipment, setting up tables for deliveries or surgical procedures in a sterile manner, stocking rooms after use, ordering proper replacement supplies. Coordinates inventory maintenance with Sterile Processing.
  • Employs and demonstrates proper aseptic, sterile techniques, and knowledge of surgical scrub techniques.
  • Answers phones on the unit, checks on patients, performs nursing aide duties, enters patient charting information into computer.
  • Cleans and stocks C/S suite and OB/Nursery equipment, delivery rooms, cribs and Nursery area as needed.
  • Give/assists with activity of daily living to include: meals, personal grooming, skin care and toileting.
  • Performs postpartum care, K-Pads, ice packs, binder application.
  • Collects specimens, performs vital signs and documents I&O.
  • Communicating changes in condition/behavior of a patient to appropriate personnel.

Education

  • Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing, Practical Nurse, or Surgical Technologist program, C.N.A. with documentation of cross-training to role of scrub-tech.


Work Experience

  • Experience as a Surgical Technologist or Surgical Nurse desired but not required.
  • Surgical Assistant should have a total of three years scrub experience.


Certification/License

  • Training as a surgical scrub required and completion of scrub tech orientation at Phelps Health in both OR and OB. American Heart Association BLS certification required prior to completion of orientation; preference will be given to those with certification as a CST.

Mental/Physical Requirements

  • Considerable mental concentration required. Lifting up to 35 lbs., turning activities and nearly constant walking required. Standing, turning, carrying, pushing, pulling, stooping, crouching, twisting, and reaching.


Working Conditions

  • Frequent exposure to infectious disease and hostile persons at times. Frequent exposure to communicable disease via blood and other body fluids. Minimal physical discomfort.

Summary GENERAL SUMMARY The Surgical Technician is responsible for assisting the RN and surgeon during operative procedures. The Surgical Technician assists with cases of various degrees of complexity. This role may require the ability to work flexible shifts and be on call to help fulfill 24/7 operations. Reports to the Operating Room Manager. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Arranges and inventories sterile set up utilizing knowledge of asepsis and sterilization techniques. Assists in preparing and moving of patients, cleaning and room set up. Provides a safe and efficient environment for the surgical patient under the direction of the registered nurse within a defined scope of practice. Performs other duties as assigned. LICENSES AND/OR CERTIFICATIONS Certification in operating room technology or surgical technology through the National Association of Operating Room Technicians required. MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS Graduation from an accredited school of surgical technology, operating room technology or a school of practical nursing or equivalent program required. Basic knowledge to perform arithmetic calculations when maintaining record of charges normally acquired through completion of high school.
