Position Summary

The Laboratory Assistant processes outpatient test requests. 

As a Laboratory Assistant, you will:

  • Perform venous and capillary collection of blood specimens for analysis and process specimens for analysis and reference testing. With supervision, may perform waived and moderately complex testing and may perform chain-of-custody drug collections. Perform various other support services for the laboratory as assigned. Maintain required documentation to comply with accrediting agencies.
     
  • Perform duties consistent with written procedures and regulatory requirements.
     
  • Support the department in achieving department goals for service, quality, regulatory compliance, financial performance, patient satisfaction, healthy work environment, and integration of intra and inter-departmental activities.

Minimum Requirements

  • High School, Equivalent (GED), or higher
     
  • Completion of a structured phlebotomy training course and clinical rotation is recommended

Preferred:

  • 6 months experience in a hospital or reference laboratory setting, physician office, outpatient clinic, or other medical setting 
     

Phlebotomy certification by ASCP or another nationally recognized certifying agency:

National Healthcare Association (NHA) --Clinical Laboratory Phlebotomy Examination (CLPlb), American Society of Clinical Pathologists-- Phlebotomy Technician Examination [PBT(ASCP)], International Academy of Phlebotomy Sciences (IAPS), National Phlebotomy Association (NPA), American Society of Phlebotomy Technicians (ASPT), National Phlebotomy Certification Examination (NPCE), National Phlebotomy Solutions (NPS), American Medical Technologists (AMT), or another national certification as approved by Laboratory Service Line leadership.

Point of Care Testing Coordinator (MT or MLS) - PRN

Position Summary The Point of Care Testing Coordinator will be responsible for monitoring and ensuring institutional compliance with point of care testing regulations established by CLIA, JCAHO, and CAP accreditation agencies. The coordinator has primary responsibility for point of care testing performed outside the main lab. As a Point of Care Testing Coordinator, you will: Model ECU Health Core Values: Integrity, Compassion, Education, Accountability, Safety, and Teamwork. Serve as a liaison between clinical staff, departmental faculty, and physicians. Respond and resolve clinician complaints, as well as takes action to prevent reoccurrence. Complete continuing education and in-service programs to maintain licensure and certification and meet regulatory and job requirements. Provide technical support and guidance for point of care laboratory services within the ECU Health System. Ensure timely and accurate testing and reporting of laboratory results. Support the development and implementation of standard operating procedures SOPs for point of care laboratory services as applicable to the testing area. Monitor and maintain compliance with CLIA, CAP, and other regulatory standards. The Lab Coordinator / Phlebotomist manages all aspects of patient lab draws. They support the nursing staff by maintaining the lab and managing aspects of required lab draws for patients. They prepare all lab draws to be sent out to third party Lab for processing. Essential Functions: Certified in phlebotomy and completes patient lab draws when needed. Oversee the daily operation so the laboratory, ensuring all lab draws and activities comply with safety regulations and quality standards, including stat lab times and consistency. The Medical Technologist III performs waived and non-waived tests defined by Clinical Laboratory Improvmeent Amendments (CLIA) in an accurate and timely manner under direct supervision. Must be familiar with and perform lab procedures in all disciplines of the department, including the following sections: Microbiology, Serology, Chemistry, Urinalysis, Hematology, and Blood Bank. The Medical Technologist III will specialize in one of these disciplines and be responsible for training and education in this discipline.
