Scope of Position 

Under the direction of the Chief Nursing Officer, the Associate Chief Nurse Officer (ACNO) is responsible for the practice of nursing at the OSU Wexner Medical Center by ensuring consistency and excellence in the standard of nursing practice across inpatient nursing units in University Hospital and Ross Heart Hospital.  The Associate Chief Nurse serves as a triad partner to the Medical Directors of Service Lines and Hospital Operations Leadership in the provision of leadership to achieve the highest performance in inpatient areas, establishing the culture for evidence-based, collaborative clinical care, and outcomes driven patient experiences. The ACNO will work with surgeons/physicians, nurses, anesthesia providers and administration to execute the organizational and nursing strategic priorities, develop team effectiveness and engagement, and set expectations for our patients’ clinical experiences and effective care transitions. The Associate Chief Nurse works with clinical leaders to develop and nurture high quality and safe care for our patients, using operational excellence and implementation science as frameworks, and peer review as appropriate.  The Associate Chief Nursing Officer will establish an accountable culture built in the Just Culture model. The Associate Chief Nurse ensures the continued advancement of the nursing profession throughout the health system.  The Associate Chief Nurse will lead the overall inpatient nursing operations which include oversight, support and advocacy for organizational quality, patient safety, nurse engagement, physician collaboration, and service excellence. 

Position Summary 

The ACNO will assist in supporting the mission of the medical center which includes creating, disseminating, and applying new knowledge and personalizing health care to meet the needs of each individual.  The ACNO leads overall operations in inpatient nursing, evaluates and plans for improvements in nursing leadership performance, sets standards for customer satisfaction (internal and external), and facilitates strategic operational planning and program development.  As a role model and spokesperson, ACNO provides guidance and expertise to encourage innovation in nursing practice.  This position will provide leadership, oversight, and coordination by developing strategic plans, objectives, goals, budgets, policies and practices of nursing, staff recruitment, orientation, on-going training, and performance management that supports and improves the delivery of patient care across a variety of locations.  The role of the ACNO includes responsibility to lead initiatives within the service lines, Division of Nursing and the Health system.

Minimum Qualifications 

For Hire:         Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing (BSN) required; Master’s degree in nursing or related field required.  Minimum eight years of administrative responsibility within a complex academic health care organization and with progressive experience in nursing leadership roles.  Current Ohio RN license required. Professional certification in Nursing Administration or clinical practice is desired with an expectation of attainment within 18 months of hire.
