What you will be doing Competencies/Duties: Travel to Westchester 2x per month Provide clinical consultation, assessment, and management to patients. Conduct outpatient evaluation, treatment and follow-up of surgical patients as directed by the supervising physician. Provide pre and post-operative and discharge education to patients and family members with regards to safety issues when applicable (e.g., medication, post-operative precautions, use of equipment, etc.). Review/interpret patient imaging and lab results; communicate results to patients and provide follow-up treatment and education. Communicate effectively and appropriately when educating patient/family in regard to their medical condition and/or hospital course. Document progress patient has made toward desired outcomes. Utilize the computerized order communication system, including transcription of medical orders, retrieval of test results and documentation of results. Maintain clear and legible history and physical documentation and all other written reports. Work independently on assigned tasks with minimal supervision. Complete any relevant patient paperwork such as medication prior authorizations, plan of care, etc. Potential to assist surgeon in operating room. Promote cooperation through teamwork. Other duties as needed for effective and safe patient care. Qualifications: NP licensure, BLS/ACLS certification and NCCPA board certification are required. Nurse Practitioner candidate must have graduated from an accredited NP program and have current NYS licensure. BLS/ACLS certification and ANCC (American Nurses Credentialing Center) certification are required. Previous experience in orthopedics is highly desired but not required. Candidate must have current Infection Control Certification and have completed a child abuse recognition course. The NP must have excellent communication skills and be a team player. It is essential that the candidate possess strong clinical skills. The Hospital for Special Surgery Perioperative Nurse Fellowship Program is for experienced nurses transitioning to practice as the operating room RN. The Hospital for Special Surgery Peri-Operative Nurse Fellowship Program was awarded Accreditation by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s for the Practice Transitions Program (PTAP). The program utilizes evidence-based practices to best onboard new-to-the-operating room RNs into the organization. The program runs for twelve months in length and includes a course designed by the Association of Perioperative Registered Nurses (AORN), called Periop 101. Fellows also train in a mock Operating Room using simulation to build core skills. Clinical orientation lasts six months and adjusts to each learner’s needs. Fellows rotate through all orthopedic subspecialties and learn both scrub and circulating roles. The goal is full clinical competency across the patient population. The Perioperative Clinical Education Specialists and the Fellowship Program Coordinator oversee the clinical orientation process. Frequent check-ins with the fellow, preceptor, clinical education specialists serve to evaluate effective transition and progress throughout the program. RNs that are hired into the cohort are required to meet throughout the year long program. Each meeting will include 1) knowledge building educational component, 2) “shared experience” component and 3) mentorship component, 4) wellness component, 5) assignments and/or project component. Regularly scheduled meetings provide a supportive environment, which allows RNs to gain confidence in their abilities to cope with the day-to-day challenges of their transition to perioperative nursing practice, and are a requirement of the program.
