Nurse externs are nursing students who are currently enrolled in a board-approved, prelicensure program of nursing program within the United States.

Skills taught in the board approved prelicensure nursing program can be performed after approval from school faculty as competent, and are deemed competent by a registered nurse or licensed practical nurse from Jennie Stuart Health.

The nurse extern may provide nursing assistance under the direct supervision of a registered nurse. A licensed practical nurse may participate with the registered nurse in providing supervision to the nurse extern.

Nurse externs may not independently assume the role, function, or responsibility of licensed personnel, or be substituted for licensed nursing staff.

SPECIAL SKILLS DESCRIPTION: Ability to read, write, understand, perform simple arithmetic, and follow directions related to basic patient care. Interpersonal skills necessary to interact with patients, visitors, and physicians in a courteous manner. Ability to complete simple comparisons between numbers. Ability to show experience in 60 percent of essential functions. Ability to concentrate and pay attention to detail for 80 percent of work time when performing basic patient care tasks.
