In partnership with the registered nurse, demonstrates leadership in the professional practice setting through oversight of the interdisciplinary health care team to provide holistic care and advocate for patients and families served.

The Student Nurse Intern (SNI) under the direct supervision of the RN can perform the following functions/tasks only when school is in session: Collaborates and communicates with the patient/resident, family, and other health care providers. In conjunction with the RN, formulates the plan of care and involves patient/residents in decisions related to care and the delivery services. The Student Nurse Intern's practice is guided by the ANA Code of Ethics. Responsible for having a validated Skills Checklist available at all times while working as a SNI. May perform duties only after their skills have been validated by the school of Nursing in conjunction with the KH RN preceptor. Students are responsible for taking the Skills Checklist to the school of nursing for completion. Works under the supervision of a KH RN preceptor. SNIs are directly responsible to the RN for performing basic bedside care and selected nursing procedures. PLEASE NOTE: even when skills on the checklist have been validated to perform independently, some duties require that a RN be present to perform. Those duties include, but are not limited to, administration of oral or injectable medication, initiation of intravenous therapy, adjusting intravenous rates, intravenous medication administration, and taking orders from physicians.

The SNI may continuously perform (including non-instructional days) the following duties upon completion of Kaweah Health position/unit specific competencies: Reports any variance in the patient's condition, to licensed staff. Reports specific patient or family needs, concerns, and changes in activity to licensed staff. Refers complaints and problems to licensed staff or department manager immediately. Answers patient call lights within two minutes as assigned. Greets patients and family members in a friendly, professional manner. Identifies self by name and job category. As assigned, assists patient with their needs. Is an active participant in achieving quality patient care. Maintains confidentiality with all patient care issues. Complies with current policies and procedures including safety and infection control. Performs tasks safely. Must keep all required certifications current. Assists the Nursing staff in performing tasks as delegated by the Registered Nurse. Provides for the toilet needs of patients by emptying bedpans and drainage container. Reports any variation in amount, color, consistency, and odor of output to the RN. Provides assistance with the admission, transfer, and discharge of patients. Orients patients to room (call light, storage of belongings, etc.). Assists patients with meals, snacks, and with water pitchers. Assists with activities of daily living: bath, ambulation oral care, etc. Collects and records intake and output, weight, height, and vital signs as delegated by the Registered Nurse. Collects respiratory rate by direct observation of the patient. Documents all care provided in the EMR as soon after the care occurs as possible. Collects, labels, and delivers specimens. Provides post-mortem care and assists in transporting the body to the morgue. Assists with emergency care by participating in crash cart checks, providing cardio-pulmonary resuscitation, and responding to Code Blue. Handles the personal property of the patient with great care. Personal appearance shall reflect a well groomed, professional appearance as outlined in HR.107, Professional Appearance Guidelines. Watches with timing capabilities, i.e. seconds hand or stopwatch, are required uniform components. Maintains a clean, safe, and neat patient environment.

Essential Functions: Under direction of the RN, supports the nurse in the application of the nursing process. Works to develop critical thinking skills through collaboration with the RN to ensure quality patient care delivery Seeks out educational opportunities related to nursing practice and critical thinking Provides basic patient care to include, but not limited to, care and comfort, record vital signs, personal care and hygiene, and mobility, including unit based specialty duties. Acts as liaison between patient and nurse to report changes or concerns to nurse Provides high level customer service to all patients, patient's family, visitors and all employees Provides accurate, precise, timely documentation when applicable for patient care Participates in hand-off/report of pertinent information regarding patient and departmental needs upon arrival and when leaving Performs delegated tasks once competency has been validated Participates in patient data collection and documentation (i.e. vital signs, intake/output, change in patient condition) Performs basic patient hygiene and care related to activities of daily living - assisting with ambulation and patient mobility, feeding, hydration and nutrition and bowel and bladder elimination Utilizes clinical technology as applicable Escalates concerns appropriately through appropriate chain of command Education: HS/GED (required) Currently enrolled in a nursing program and has completed one clinical nursing course and one clinical rotation (required) Required Licensing & Certifications: BLS (preferred) Experience: Recent experience in acute care and/or long term care facility (preferred) Skills & Abilities: Ability to clearly communicate to other members of the healthcare team Ability to understand and follow directions of healthcare team Knowledge of patient and healthcare safety standards and regulations (i.e. falls, skin breakdown, suicide prevention, environment of care) Infection prevention and transmission-based precautions Team dynamics Compassionate, relationship-based approach in care activities Accountability for completion of assigned tasks Critical thinking Advanced problem solving Understanding of nursing process Professionalism Training: Must have completed First Clinical Rotation as a Nursing Student EPIC Electronic Health Record (EHR) training (preferred) Mercy Health is an equal opportunity employer.
