The Nurse Navigator competencies include the fundamental knowledge, skills and expertise required to proficiently (a) participate in the care of patients with a past, current, or potential diagnosis of cancer, (b) assist patients with cancer, families and caregivers to overcome healthcare system barriers, and (c) provide education and resources to facilitate informed decision making and timely access to quality health and psychosocial care throughout all phases of the cancer continuum. The ONN is cognizant of the psychosocial and financial impact that disease and hospitalization has on the patient and family and acts as an advocate to identify and obtain needed resources and support. Nurse Navigators have expertise in nursing practice and ensure continuing expertise through clinical experience and continuing education. The complexity of the role requires a high level of autonony.
Education required: Graduate from an accredited school of nursing
Education preferred: BSN strongly preferred
License, Certification and/or Registration: Current Alabama or Multistate Nursing license required. Current certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) is required within 3 months of hire. OCN or ONN certification required within 2 years of hire. ONS Fundamental Chemotherapy/Immunotherapy card required within 6 months of hire.
Experience: Three (3) years nursing experience required. One (1) year of Oncology or GYN nursing experience preferred. Experience in an outpatient facility preferred.
Additional Skills/Abilities: Strong organization skills; Ability to prioritize and reprioritize quickly; Ability to develop collaborative relationships both internally and externally; Strong leadership skills; Strong interpersonal skills; Strong verbal and written communication skills; Ability to work in teams; Ability to work autonomously; Strong oncology knowledge; Basic computer skills, knowledge of managed care, critical thinking skills; Working knowledge of insurance coverage and procedures and working knowledge of community resources.
