Cardiothoracic Surgery Physician Assistant, Nurse Practitioner

Cleveland Clinic Martin North Hospital has an opportunity for a Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner to join our Cardiothoracic Surgery team at Cleveland Clinic Martin North in Stuart Florida. This is an operative role that requires first-assisting, along with inpatient management of post-operative patients and the outpatient clinic as well.

Nationally certified Advanced Practice Provider who provides primary and/or specialty care in a variety of healthcare settings. Functions in collaboration with the health care team in accordance with certification and licensure. Practice emphasizes health promotion, disease prevention and the diagnosis and treatment of acute and chronic health problems. Responsible for dissemination of knowledge through instructing, leading and developing educational programs.

Responsibilities include:

Inpatient Management: Comprehensive evaluation, treatment, and documentation of all cardiothoracic surgery patients in the Pre-operative, intraoperative and postoperative periods as well as follow-up after discharge to ensure there is continuity of care in patient management.

Rounding in the ICU and on the telemetry floor. Patient evaluation and treatment after team discussion with the supervising physician, as well as clear and concise documentation in the electronic medical records. This will include daily progress notes, consult notes, discharge summaries, and patient education.
Must display integrity, professionalism, and ability to function in acute and emergent settings, while maintaining a respectful attitude and teamwork mentality.
Continuously seek opportunities for clinical and professional advancement in the field by gaining new skills and maintaining pertinent certifications.

Operating Room: Perform conduit harvesting for Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting (Endoscopic and open vein harvest), first assist during Cardiac and thoracic cases. Cases include CABG, Valve repair and replacements, aortic aneurysm replacements, aortic dissections. Thoracic cases using Davinci Robotic Surgical Systems for lobectomies and other minimally invasive surgeries, VATS surgeries, and open thoracic cases as needed.

Office Responsibilities: See patients for clinic visits, small office procedures, returning phone calls and providing education and clarification to the patients and their family members using all the tools available.

Call Responsibilities: The PA takes the first call with physician backup. PA coverage is provided 24/7, and shared equally between 3 PAs.

Schedule: Monday - Friday, 6:30am – 4:30 with variability.

Call: 1:3

Preferred Experience: 2 years of CT surgery experience is preferred. Newly licensed PAs and NPs will be considered, especially with cardiothoracic clinical rotations and a clear interest in this field.

Experience with first assist in the OR for cardiothoracic surgical cases including competency in vein harvesting is preferred.

Responsibilities include assist in surgery, consults, rounds in CVICU and on floors, ambulatory clinic.

Additional Responsibilities:

Conducts thorough medical histories, performs complete physical examinations (where indicated), initiates appropriate lab, radiology tests or other special tests required for evaluation of illness, and scrutinizes lab data to establish a record of the patient's current health status and to develop a working diagnosis and treatment plan. Works in collaboration with the health care team.
Performs and interprets common laboratory, radiologic, cardiographic and other routine diagnostic procedures used to identify pathophysiologic processes as credentialed and privileged by the Medical Executive Committee and the Governing Body of the applicable hospitals.
Performs routine and specialized procedures as credentialed and privileged by the Medical Executive Committee and the Governing Body of the applicable hospitals.
May prescribe and monitor medications as allowed by license through applicable state board and Cleveland Clinic policies.
Educates patients and answers questions regarding their disease, treatments, related drug and treatment side effects and hazards.
Participates in medical team rounds; collaborates with nursing, medical and other healthcare team members regularly to ensure quality patient care.
Refers patients to specialists as appropriate for consultation or for specialized health resources and treatment.
Ensures continuity of care by serving as a liaison between patient and other members of the multi-disciplinary care team or with other specialty areas as necessary.

Education:

Effective 05/01/2014: MSN required upon hire or within 3 years of hire for external hires and internal hires moving from a non-APRN licensed role to an APRN licensed role.

Duties to include: first assist in spine surgery, inpatient rounding weekday/weekend, on-call rotation, outpatient clinic. Work schedule 4 -10's. Functions in collaboration with the health care team in accordance with certification and licensure. Practice emphasizes health promotion, disease prevention and the diagnosis and treatment of acute and chronic health problems. Responsible for dissemination of knowledge through instructing, leading and developing educational programs. Responsibilities: Conducts thorough medical histories, performs complete physical examinations (where indicated), initiates appropriate lab, radiology tests or other special tests required for evaluation of illness, and scrutinizes lab data to establish a record of the patient's current health status and to develop a working diagnosis and treatment plan. Works in collaboration with the health care team. Performs and interprets common laboratory, radiologic, cardiographic and other routine diagnostic procedures used to identify pathophysiologic processes as credentialed and privileged by the Medical Executive Committee and the Governing Body of the applicable hospitals. Performs routine and specialized procedures as credentialed and privileged by the Medical Executive Committee and the Governing Body of the applicable hospitals. May prescribe and monitor medications as allowed by license through applicable state board and Cleveland Clinic policies. Refers patients to specialists as appropriate for consultation or for specialized health resources and treatment. Ensures continuity of care by serving as a liaison between patient and other members of the multi-disciplinary care team or with other specialty areas as necessary.
