General Purpose of Job:

A professional care giver who assumes responsibility and accountability for the overall direction of operating room personnel and activities under the direct supervision of the CV Team Lead and the Operating Room Manager. Administers peri‑operative care for patients undergoing surgery using general anesthesia, sedation, and local anesthesia when appropriate. Assists the surgeon and other professional and technical personnel in carrying out operating room and surgical functions. The patient care requirements include those of infant, child and adolescent patients when these patient populations are served as well as the adult in the cardiac service line.

Is knowledgeable of setup and usage of service equipment
Uses sterilizers effectively and can verbalize knowledge of systems
Sets up room appropriately for procedure
Takes into account size of patient in selection of supplies, equipment
Breaks down room after procedure utilizing standard precautions
Reports damaged or broken instruments/equipment and removes from usage
Transports instruments back to decontamination in closed carts for following cases
Deals effectively with rapidly changing conditions, including emergency and stressful situations
Administers peri‑operative care for patients undergoing surgery using general anesthesia, sedation, and local anesthesia when appropriate.
Individualizes patient plan of care as it relates to the particular procedure that the patient is undergoing as well as to individual patient issues.
Is in charge of OR room, ensuring that appropriate personnel, equipment, instruments available to do procedure.
Educates both patient and family on perioperative care they will be receiving.
Documents in a complete and logical manner ensuring all critical information is included on patient record.
Able to operate and troubleshoot perioperative equipment
Acts as a patient advocate
Assists anesthesiologist when needed.
Passes patient information on to appropriate staff and physicians.
Charges patients appropriately
Participates in process improvement activities of unit
Attends mandatory in-services and unit staff meetings.
Utilizes standard precautions in patient care.
Utilizes self directed learning to improve nursing knowledge and skills
Maintains a safe OR environment for patients, staff, and physicians.

Education and/or Experience:

Graduate of approved school of professional nursing
Previous OR experience preferred as a scrub nurse or surgical technician.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations.

The Case Manager facilitates clinically appropriate and fiscally responsible patient care through communication with the treating physicians, and all other members of the health care team. The Case Management Process is centered on a client/support system. It is holistic in its coverage of the client’s situation and addresses medical, physical, emotional, financial, psychosocial, behavioral, emotional, and other needs, as well as that of the member’s support system. The case manager screens the member to identify the need for case-managed services by conducting a series of assessment activities including: 1) reviewing the member’s current and past health and medical history, vocational history, and functional status 2) stratifying the member’s risk (low, moderate, or high) after a comprehensive assessment and 3) identifying the member’s specific or chief complaint(s), including actual and potential problems. The Case Management Process consists of nine phases through which Case Managers provide care to Driscoll Health Plan members: Screening, Assessing, Stratifying Risk, Planning, implementing (Care Coordination/Planning), Following Up, Transitioning, Communicating Post Transition, and Evaluating. The overall process is iterative and cyclical, its phases being revisited as necessary until the desired outcomes are achieved and the members’ interests are met.
