Position Overview

The Medical Assistant Dual Trainee Program at Children’s Minnesota is a training program through the state of Minnesota where an individual works as Clinic Assistant while completing a Medical Assistant program at Rasmussen University, Anoka Technical College, or Century College. The program comes with up to $8,000 in tuition assistance for each trainee, to be used by July 2027.

The expectation is that the individual works in a 0.6 FTE (48 hours per two weeks), benefit eligible position while maintaining a 'good' status in school while taking full time credits. The trainee has the option to complete their unpaid externship with Children’s or outside of Children’s with set externship hours decided by the school program. There will be no requirement to repay funding to Children’s for the MA program, unless the individual chooses to utilize tuition reimbursement if funding runs out. The trainee will complete their on-the-job training in a setting amongst Medical Assistants to observe and shadow tasks while completing the tasks assigned to them as a Clinic Assistant. The trainee will work with their direct leader to create a weekly schedule that fits business need, their FTE, and flows around their class schedule.

If the individual does not maintain a 'good' status in school or their position or is not taking full time classes per semester, they would be removed from the grant program and their CA position.

What is a Clinic Assistant at Children’s MN? (position during training)

The Clinic Assistant exists to assist the providers and staff in the clerical and patient care aspects of the pediatric clinic such as rooming, vitals, screening, swab collections, and use of medical data systems.

What is a Medical Assistant at Children’s MN? (position after training)The Medical Assistant role provides professional family-centered care to infants, children, and adolescents as delegated by a provider or RN which may include the following duties:

* Escort patients to exam room and appropriately document information.

* Prepare and administer medications and injections as directed by a clinician.

* Perform and assist with procedures and treatments as directed by clinician, such as; administering hearing/vision tests, rapid strep testing, nebulizer treatments and urine catheterizations.

* Perform laboratory specimen collection and processing to ensure the accurate and appropriate performance of patient testing while maintaining patient dignity, comfort and confidentiality.

* Maintain knowledge of, and comply with, all relevant laws, regulations and policies, procedures and standards.

The posted salary represents a market competitive range based on salary survey benchmark data for similar roles in the local or national market. Annual salaries displayed are based on full-time employment (40 standard hrs per week). Annual salaries for part-time positions will be prorated based on the employee’s scheduled weekly hours in relation to the full-time standard. When determining individual pay rates, we carefully consider a wide range of factors including but not limited to market indicators for the specific role, the skills, education, training, credentials and experience of the candidate, internal equity and organizational needs.

Key Position Details: **$2,000 starting bonus available for eligible external talent** 1.0 FTE (80 hours per two-week pay period) 8-hour day shift No weekends May be required to travel/float within 25 - mile radius of the primary clinic Eligible for mileage reimbursement Job Description: Provides support to providers and the nursing staff in the delivery of timely, quality patient health care services. Some duties include assisting with rooming patients, managing patient flow, administering medication, and communication with patients. Principle Responsibilities Rooms patients, manages patient flow and obtains adequate patient medical information/data. Collects and confirms pt information via interview, questionnaires, vital signs and accurately documents in EMR according to documentation standards. Assists patients, as necessary, to prepare for physician exam, including providing psycho-emotional support Assists with the collection, labeling, and processing of specimens. Facilitates obtaining lab/imaging results. Works with the electronic medical records in basket, responding to messages as delegated by RN or provider. May need to help cover front desk and provide backup to patient registration/scheduling. Performs patient care tasks as delegated by Provider or RN Performs injections. Assists with procedures. Supports patient care and reinforces patient information regarding tests, labs, procedure preparation, treatment plan, preventative or other health information. Coordinates results of tests, procedures etc. with provider or RN. May prepare refill information for provider to review and prescribe. May assist with patient transportation. Contributes to an environment that is safe for patients, visitors, and employees. Reports environmental risks or equipment malfunctions to Supervisor and via safety huddles. Uses equipment following policies, procedures and manufacturer directions or standards. Follows all policies, procedures, standard work, and proper techniques when providing patient care. Cleans, stocks, maintains inventory for exam, medication and supply rooms. Reports any acute problems and changes in patient's condition. Applies High reliable safety principles to all interactions. Other duties as assigned. Required Qualifications Must be 18 years of age with education and/or experience needed to meet required principle competencies as listed on the job description Candidates must have completed a Medical Assistant program or a comparable healthcare education program with a similar scope of clinical training Candidates with fewer than six (6) months of Medical Assistant experience must have completed a minimum of 160 hours of clinical externship or equivalent clinical practicum Preferred Qualifications High school diploma or GED Previous Medical Assistant experience Medical Terminology Licenses/Certifications Must meet at least ONE of the requirements below: ◦ Current BLS certification from the American Heart Association ◦ Current BLS certification from the American Red Cross ◦ Allina in-house BLS training (within 30 days of hire) Medical Assistant certification preferred. Acceptable certifications include: ◦ Certified Medical Assistant (CMA - AAMA) ◦ Registered Medical Assistant (RMA - AMT) ◦ Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA – NHA) ◦ National Certified Medical Assistant (NCMA – NCCT) ◦ Certified Medical Administrative Assistant (CMAA - NHA) Physical Demands Medium Work*: Lifting weight up to 32 lbs. occasionally (*Allina Safe Patient Moving Policy), up to 25 lbs. frequently Pay Range Pay Range: $22.04 to $30.01 per hour The pay described reflects the base hiring pay range. Your starting rate would depend on a variety of factors including, but not limited to, your experience, education, and the union agreement (if applicable). Shift, weekend and/or other differentials may be available to increase your pay rate for certain shifts or work.
