Surgical Services Clinical Instructor — Willis Knighton North
The Surgical Services Clinical Instructor is responsible for providing high quality clinical education, instruction, and mentorship to students, new hires, and existing staff within the surgical services' environment. This role supports competency development in perioperative practice, promotes safe patient care, ensures compliance with regulatory and accreditation standards, and fosters professional growth through evidence‑based teaching practices.
Essential Duties And Responsibilities
Clinical Instruction & Education
- Provide direct clinical instruction and supervision to students, residents, or staff within surgical services (Operating Room, PACU, Sterile Processing, Pre‑Op/Post‑Op).
- Facilitate orientation, onboarding, and competency validation for new surgical services staff.
- Deliver individualized and group instruction using adult learning principles and evidence‑based practice.
- Evaluate learner performance through observation, skills validation, documentation review, and formal assessments.
- Provide timely, constructive feedback to support learner development and safe practice.
Curriculum & Program Support
- Collaborate with leadership, educators, and academic partners to implement and support clinical education programs.
- Assist in the development, revision, and maintenance of instructional materials, competencies, and clinical evaluation tools.
- Ensure educational content aligns with current standards of practice, regulatory requirements, and organizational policies.
Patient Safety & Quality
- Promote a culture of safety, professionalism, and accountability in all clinical teaching activities.
- Ensure adherence to infection prevention, sterile technique, and perioperative safety standards.
- Identify learning gaps or performance concerns and escalate appropriately to leadership or academic partners.
Professional Development & Collaboration
- Serve as a clinical role model demonstrating professionalism, ethical conduct, and clinical excellence.
- Participate in departmental meetings, education committees, and quality improvement initiatives as assigned.
- Maintain current clinical knowledge and teaching skills through continuing education and professional involvement.
Qualifications
Required
- Active, unrestricted RN license.
- Minimum of 5 years of recent perioperative or surgical services clinical experience.
- Demonstrated knowledge of perioperative standards (e.g., AORN, ASPAN).
- Effective communication, teaching, and coaching skills.
- Ability to supervise learners while maintaining patient safety and workflow efficiency.
- Bachelor’s degree in Nursing or related healthcare field; Master’s degree preferred.
Preferred
- Prior experience in clinical education, precepting, or academic instruction.
- Professional certification (e.g., CNOR, CAPA/CPAN, CRCST, or specialty certification as applicable).
- Familiarity with competency-based education and clinical documentation systems.
