Job Overview

The Operating Room Nurse Senior provides highly skilled patient care in a surgical setting in accordance with applicable scope and standards of practice with the policies, values, and mission of the organization. Monitors and manages the patient and operative environment during surgery through expert knowledge of managing complications, assisting in advanced surgical techniques, and critical thinking to anticipate the needs of the surgical team and adjust care strategies accordingly. Routinely provides direct guidance and oversight of new graduate nurses and newly hired team members in all patient care and clinical activities and ensures that behaviors adhere to documentation standards, standards of excellence and all other policies and procedures.

The Operating Room at Children’s Hospital Colorado-Colorado Springs is a Level II Trauma Center with 4 OR units and a procedure room that treats children and adolescents. The unit currently supports more than 13 different surgical specialties and performs more than 6,300 cases annually. Our unique yet impressive team is comprised of bachelor’s prepared nurses, certified surgical technicians, anesthesia technicians, anesthesia providers, and surgeons. The staff in the OR are proud to provide safe, quality care to our patients. We perform a wide variety of surgical procedures, including abdominal, cleft, craniofacial, and plastic reconstructive surgery, colorectal surgery, ENT surgery, trauma surgery, neurosurgery, orthopedic surgery, ophthalmology surgery, and urology surgery. Our OR nurses and surgical technologists receive extensive training and education in all surgical specialties, promoting communication, teamwork, and critical thinking. We promote continued education and encourage staff to pursue specialty certifications. Job Status: full time, 36 hours per week, eligible for benefits

Shift: weened nights (Friday, Saturday, Sunday 1845-0715)

This position is eligible for relocation assistance, if relocating from 100 miles or greater.

Duties & Responsibilities

• Consults and coordinates with health care team members to assess, plan, implement and evaluate intraoperative patient care plans.
• Navigates and documents in the EMR to support patient care and audits unit documentation to improve accuracy and minimize documentation errors.
• Works within scope of practice and delegates according to Nurse Practice Act.
• Manages the allocation of resources to meet patient needs through appropriate assignments based on patient acuity, staff competency, unit needs and patient safety.
• Communicates with the Associate Clinical Manager(s) in mediating problems involving patient/family, hospital personnel and the public.
• Leads the provision and monitoring of staff competencies. Collaborates with the CNE/CNS to meet the educational need of the unit(s) to maintain continuity of care related to specific patient-care requirements.
• Expert knowledge of policy and procedure for all clinical skills to effectively provide a variety of teaching methodologies to ensure the orientee learns and can competently demonstrate those skills in accordance with policies and procedures.
• Provides direct guidance and oversight for the orientee in all patient care and clinical activities and ensures that those behaviors adhere to documentation standards, standards of excellence, and all other policy and procedure
• Helps to create orientees’ weekly orientation goals based on current level of clinical experience and available learning experiences; participates in progress tracking meetings together with leader/manager and educator to communicate on progress of orientation, areas for opportunity, and readiness of the orientee to enter practice independently
• Communicates to Clinical Educator any delays or problems related to achieving an orientee's goals as soon as identified to ensure immediate intervention for optimal success. Notifies CE of successes of the orientee (not just of delays/problems) to ensure accountability of the leadership team to the overall progress of the orientation, strengths, and opportunities for growth.
• Completes orientees evaluation form on completion of orientation, includes any other required regulatory documentation of orientee competency such as verification of competency to administer blood/products, competency to operate the defibrillator, and all competency statements related to job essential functions of an independently functioning clinical nurse.
• Serves as the communication liaison to patients, families and members of the operating team.
• Skilled ability to function as charge nurse when needed. Charge nurse responsibilities include working with the ACM/Manager to mediate problems involving providers, patient/family, and hospital personnel, providing clinical follow-up through just-in-time coaching when desired outcomes are not achieved, and taking ownership in the financial success of the unit with appropriate resource utilization and management of staffing.
• Provides leadership for unit and shared governance initiatives to improve patient care, throughput as determined by leadership.
• Leads educational instruction, simulation experiences, and clinical competency verification.
• Actively participates in local, regional, or national operating room organizations.
• Prepares operating room for patient and procedure.
• Delivers patient and family centered care incorporating the nursing process while providing developmentally appropriate, culturally sensitive, evidence-based care. Actively anticipates changes in patient outcomes/ unit needs in the provision of care.
• Communicate and advocate patient values, preferences and expressed needs as part of implementation of care plan, evaluation of care and assessment of patient/family learning needs to the interdisciplinary team. Initiates and anticipates individualized care and education for patients/families across the continuum using an interdisciplinary approach.
• Utilizes outcome data at the patient level to make care decisions.
• Leads quality improvement activities through skillful use quality measures to understand individual and unit performance.
• Communicates observations or concerns related to unsafe situations that pose a risk to patients, families or the health care team.
• Recognizes and applies information and technology of patient and unit outcomes to facilitate communication, clinical decision making, error prevention, and care coordination.
  
  

Minimum Qualifications

Education: Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN)

Experience: Four (4) years perioperative nursing experience

Certification(s): BLS/CPR, PALS, and ACLS from the American Heart Association with at least 6 months left before expiration is required upon hire. CNOR within 6 months of hire.

Licensure(s): Current State licensure as a Registered Nurse (RN)

Salary Information

Pay is dependent on applicant's relevant experience.

Hourly Range: $44.39 to $66.58
