The Bariatric Program Coordinator is responsible for assessing, planning, directing, implementing, coordinating and evaluating the effectiveness of the day to day operations of the Bariatric Program in accordance with the facility policies, philosophy objectives and standards. Accountable for COE compliance.

 

Works collaboratively with office staff, surgeons and hospital personnel to ensure successful progression of the bariatric surgical patient; from first point of interest, through the qualification period, patients pathway of care, surgery process and post-operative care.

• Serves as point person for coordination of care to include insurance approval process and pre-diagnostic evaluation and education.

• Assists in the development of pre and post-operative orders/protocols for the bariatric patient.

• Assists with sustaining patient support group to provide guidance on diet, physical activity and behavioral therapy, as well as provides social support before and after surgery.

• Works directly with hospital personnel to ensure appropriate care for bariatric patients. This mayinclude training of hospital staff to the special needs of the bariatric population.

• Institutes a data collection method to objectively track trending/outcomes in a manner adherent to Center of Excellence data requirements.

• Ensures that the program follows established policies and procedures to meet minimum life safety standards of TJC/OSHA and all patient health information set forth by HIPAA.

• Works with marketing to provide on-going patient education seminars to the community resulting in new patient referrals.

• Assists in the development of nutritional protocols for the bariatric patient.

• Collaborates with coding and billing personnel to ensure that charges are captured and submitted accurately. Helps to identify missed revenue opportunities and suggest appropriate solutions.

• Assess patient’s physical, psychosocial, cultural and spiritual needs through observation, interview, review of medical records & clinical data. Evaluates patient’s response and intervenes to ensure optimal patient outcome.

• Develop and implement patient plan of care and observe outcomes in accordance with nursing standards and in collaboration with interdisciplinary team.

• Demonstrate competency in a variety of therapeutic/diagnostic intervention including but not limited to IV’s, incision/wound care, medication administration, catherization and specimen collections.

• Delegates to non-RN personnel in accordance with State Board of Nursing and hospital policy, effectively uses time, personnel, equipment and supplies to provide high quality, cost effective patient care.

• Verbalized and understanding of the value of measurement and the importance of continuous quality improvement data. Use quality measures to improve performance and accountability for patient outcomes, patient experiences and safe delivery of care.

• Promote, advocate and collaborate to protect the health safety and rights of each patient.

• Manages resources and patient flow through matching nursing competencies with individualized patient’s and unit needs. Uses standards of care.

• Coordinates the data entry related to the bariatric patient into MBSAQIP database for purposes of tracking the patient care to achieve best practice standards. This meets COE guidelines for certification.

• Provide patient/family education through assessment of patient/family learning readiness, needs, and ability. Provide teaching and evaluate effectiveness of teaching.

Job Requirements

In addition to bringing humankindness to the workplace each day, qualified candidates will need the following:

 

  • Three years of experience in an acute setting.
  • Assoiciates Degree Required.
  • Basic Life Support from the American Heart Association. 
  • Current RN license in the state of employment.
  • Previous Bariatric experience preferred.

Schedule: Monday - Friday (8:00 AM - 4:30 PM)

Physical Requirements-Sedentary work -(prolonged periods of sitting and exert up to 10lbs force occasionally)
