Clinical Nurse Supervisor - Outpatient/Ambulatory - Family Medicine

Overview

At the direction of the Associate Nurse Director, and in collaboration with the New London Medical Group Practice Manager, provides guidance and leadership for the clinical practice of the nursing staff in the ambulatory settings to include, Family Medicine, Pediatrics, and Specialty Services at New London Hospital (NLH). Accountable for the quality of nursing care service, in accordance with the NH Nurse Practice Act, hospital policies, and the NH Board of Nursing rules for delegated nursing tasks. Collaborates with the Associate Nurse Director, Ambulatory Educator, and LPN/MA Supervisor to assure professional development and ongoing competence of the nursing staff. Collaborates with the Ambulatory Nursing Director, and Ambulatory Educator to assure that system nursing practice goals and expectations are met.

Responsibilities

Clinical Operations

  • Directly responsible for operational and performance management of the RNs in Family Medicine, Pediatrics and select Specialty Areas. Oversight of LPN’s in specialties.  (Direct reports).
  • Manages Clinical Schedule, Time Away, and Payroll for Direct Reports, and collaborates with other nursing supervisors to ensure adequate staff coverage throughout Ambulatory Services.
  • Helps support the Ambulatory Educator with the onboarding of new nursing staff.
  • Provides leadership in emergent situations and in those that require activation of the Emergency Activation Plan.
  • Maintains up-to-date working knowledge of emergency preparedness in order to function as a resource to staff.
  • Maintains clinical skills in order to provide direct care as needed. (This will be a working supervisory role). Will need to fulfill RN vacancies within Family Medicine, Pediatrics, Specialty Services, including Express Care.
  • Maintains a presence in the clinical area and is actively engaged in the discussion of clinical care provided to patients.
  • Maintains skills in order to function as a "super user" for the EMR. Participates actively in the review of existing policies and procedures.
  • Collaborates with other health care disciplines/departments to maintain communication and provide an optimal level of patient care.

Leadership and Staff

  • Role models professional standards of behavior and nursing practice as required through the Nurse Practice Act.
  • Collaborates with the Ambulatory Nurse Director, and Ambulatory Educator to develop the clinical skills and knowledge of nurses in the ambulatory setting.
  • Actively engages staff in educational activities in collaboration with the Ambulatory Educator.
  • Develops and maintains collaborative relationships with leaders throughout the organization.
  • Actively participates in the Ambulatory Leadership Team to collaborate with Newport Health Center (NHC) leadership to standardize clinical processes as indicated. Collaborates with the NHC Clinical Nurse Manager, Lead Nurse and NLH Associate Nurse Director, and Ambulatory Educator to assure consistency of high-quality clinical care throughout NLH ambulatory sites.
  • Provides clinical consultation and assistance upon request to other patient care areas at NLH.
  • Maintains professional competence through participation in education programs and workshops.

Quality

  • Accountable for working with staff to ensure CMS survey readiness.
  • Assists and supports Ambulatory Leadership in the implementation and evaluation of performance improvement indicators.
  • Functions as a "champion" with strategic initiatives by role modeling, serving as an educator, and participating in the evaluation of the strategy board initiative.
  • Serves as a resource to clinical staff for specialty-based information and research.
  • Promotes clinical practice based on best evidence.
  • Promotes a culture of patient-centered care.  Works effectively with the Patient Experience Program Manager to assure the patient/family experience is of the highest quality.
  • Demonstrates ability to work effectively and collaboratively with physician leaders and colleagues in the departments to assure quality in the provision of patient care.

Qualifications

  • BSN preferred.
  • Minimum of 3 years of nursing experience.
  • Experience in Ambulatory setting preferred.

REQUIRED LICENSE(S): • Licensed RN with NH eligibility REQUIRED CERTIFICATIONS: • BLS within 1 year • AVADE training within 1 year
