Surgical Technologists, sometimes called “scrub techs,” assist with procedures under the supervision of surgeons and RNs, helping ensure quality patient care before, during and after the operative procedure. In this role, you will perform a variety of tasks, such as checking supplies and equipment, setting up sterile tables, passing instruments to the surgeon and sterilizing instruments after procedures. This position offers a unique way to gain hands-on experience in an operative environment while making a lasting difference in the lives of patients and caregivers every day. Ultimately, surgery could not be possible without your support.


A caregiver in this position works varying shifts from 6:45 a.m. – 7:15 p.m. including weekend and holiday rotation requirements.

A caregiver who excels in this role will:

  • Provide quality, individualized patient care in the perioperative, intraoperative and postoperative phases.
  • Follow guidelines for perioperative practices as established by AORN.
  • Review daily assignment and ascertain surgeon-specific preferences and anesthesia.
  • Identify and prioritize individual patient care needs.
  • Plan care based on contemplated procedure, standards of practice, admission assessment and MD preferences.
  • Assemble, check and open sterile packs, sutures and more.
  • Practice and assist others in maintaining aseptic technique and electrical and environmental safety in department.
  • Comply with required standards for patient positioning, skin preparation, counting and side-site verification.
  • Remain with the sterile setup to assure maintenance of the sterile field.
  • Assist with draping the sterile field.
  • Report and/or correct any break in sterile technique.
  • Prepare and edit surgeon's preference lists to assure quality care of the surgical patient.
  • Communicate pertinent information during procedure and during personnel changes.
  • Assure that equipment and supplies are utilized at appropriate levels and returned to their proper location after use.
  • Collect specimens as directed by the surgeon and identify the origin of each specimen to the RN Circulator.
  • Assist surgeons and assistants with retraction and suction as directed.
  • Assure that all biohazard material is handled and disposed of properly using universal precautions.
  • Keep accurate counts of all sutures, sharps, soft goods and instruments.
  • Assure that all instrumentation is returned to decontamination with proper documentation count sheets.

Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:

  • Graduate of a Surgical Technology Program, accredited through Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Program (CAAHEP) or Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES) required
  • OR Completion of military surgical technology program will meet the educational requirements of an accredited Surgical Technology Program
  • If hired after August 1, 2015, certification of either CST or TS-C required for candidates who have not completed an accredited Surgical Technology program:
  • Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) through the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA)
  • Certified Tech in Surgery, (TS-C) through the National Center for Competency Training (NCCT)
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) through American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross


Preferred qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:

  • Two years of experience in a multi-disciplined OR in an acute care hospital setting

Physical Requirements:

  • Workload is heavy and requires constant lifting, moving of patients, equipment, instrument trays, and supplies.
  • Able to lift items up to 50 pounds without assistance and greater than 50 pounds with assistance.
  • Stooping, pushing and pulling required when moving patients or equipment into position for surgery.
  • Ability to work at a fast pace and to prioritize multiple assignments/projects and respond to numerous requests; ability to resolve conflicts among staff and to work collaboratively with department director, physicians and other members of the Healthcare team; ability to ensure operational efficiency; ability to problem solve and make decisions; ability to exercise self-control and tolerate stress when dealing with multiple requests and/or conflicting demands from multiple customers.
  • Needs minimal sustained direction in assessing work load, directing staff and carrying out departmental and professional responsibilities; self-starting and self-motivating; working hours may exceed eight (8) hours per day and is based on what is needed to accomplish completion of the daily surgical schedule.

Personal Protective Equipment:

  • Follows Standard Precautions using personal protective equipment as required for procedures.

This is a great hands-on learning opportunity that will allow you to enhance your skills each and every day. This position is part of Cleveland Clinic’s Weekender Flex Program and will require you to work two 12-hour shifts per weekend and one 12-hour shift during the week. Weekend shift options start at 7:00pm on Fridays and end at 7:30am on Mondays. While you are only working 36 hours a week, Cleveland Clinic will pay you for 44 hours of work and give you full-time status and benefits. This schedule allows caregivers to enjoy personal time during the week with family and friends and take care of any errands that will not interfere with a typical day shift schedule. Orientation is 3 months working Monday through Friday, from 7:00am to 3:30pm. Surgical Technologists, sometimes called “scrub techs”, assist in surgical procedures under the supervision of surgeons and registered nurses and ensure quality patient care during the operative procedure and maintaining a sterile field. Surgical Technologists perform a variety of functions, such as checking supplies and equipment, setting up sterile tables, performing appropriate counts, draping the sterile field, passing instruments to the surgeon and assistant during the procedure, prepare sterile dressing and clean instruments for terminal sterilization. A caregiver in this position works from 11:00 a.m. – 11:30 p.m. with on-call requirements. The start/end time may vary based on the needs of the department. A caregiver who excels in this role will: Assist surgeons in the scrub capacity. Scrub, gown and glove caregivers. Set up tables with instruments and supplies. Anticipate the needs of the surgeon, including instruments, sutures, sponges and supplies. Assist in preparing and draping patients and operative areas. Understand and maintain aseptic technique. Count instruments, sponges and needles with a circulating RN and report correctness and discrepancies. Assist in applying dressings and casts. Assemble all instruments and equipment for decontamination. Assist with maintaining equipment, routine terminal cleaning, housekeeping duties, room inventory and stocking supplies. Assist the surgical team as a circulator under the direction of an RN. Assist in transporting patients and preoperative preparation. Assume call responsibility. Transitional team duties: remove trash from OR, wash out trash cans, wash tables and furniture, move tables and furniture, wipe all flat surfaces, spot clean walls, clean floors, clean and stock anesthesia equipment and clean, disinfect, sterilize, test, replace and keeps adequate inventory of reusable anesthesia equipment, cardiac monitors and cables, blood pressure equipment, stethoscopes and blood infusers. Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include: Successful completion of a Surgical Technology program accredited through CCAAHEP or ABHES OR completion of a military surgical technology program OR state license as a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) Certification as a Surgical Technologist TS-C (Tech in Surgery - Certified - National Center for Competency Training) or CST (Certified Surgical Technologist - National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting). Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross Preferred qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include: Surgical Technologist certification from candidates who have completed an accredited Surgical Technology program Physical Requirements: Requires full body motion to move and lift patients, manual finger dexterity with good eye-hand coordination; involves extensive standing and walking. Medium Work - Exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or greater than negligible up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Physical Demand requirements are in excess of those for Light Work.
