Surgical Technologist

Dept : MAC Operating Room Schedule : 11am-1130pm Hours per pay period : 72 Position Summary: Assists surgeons and other medical professionals in operating rooms and similar environments. Prepares patients, rooms and equipment for pending surgical procedures. Assists during those procedures as part of the surgical team. Essential Functions and Responsibilities : Prepares operating rooms, ensuring that all equipment and supplies needed for the procedure are properly disinfected, assembled and in working order. Ensures the preparation and maintenance of the sterile field in operating room. Provides supportive care during the pre-operative phase. Prepares patient's skin for surgery; moves and positions patients in the operating room; monitors vital signs and observes status. During surgery performs scrub functions including passing sterile surgical equipment to surgeons, may cut sutures, tracking items used/performing instrument counts, collecting and labeling specimens taken and helping dress a patient's wounds. May transport patient after procedure. Ensures that operating rooms are clean, sterile and stocked prior to next procedure. Performs clerical duties such as ordering supplies, maintaining logs, pulling up and/or entering patient information, doing inventory and supporting the administrative and clerical staff as needed. Delivers compassionate support, attention, and assistance to patients and families. Ensures compliance with all health care regulations, including HIPAA and OSHA. Maintains safe and clean working environment and protects patients and employees by adhering to infection-control, hazardous waste and other policies and protocols. Performs other related duties as required and directed. Qualifications: Required: High school diploma or equivalent. Completion of an accredited surgical technology training program. One month of job-related experience and/or training. BLS certification from American Heart Association (AHA), American Red Cross (ARC), or Canadian equivalent, is required before start date and valid at least 60 days beyond start date . Minimum of 400 hours of clinicals experience . Preferred: One year of experience in a medical setting. Qualifications: Required: High school diploma or equivalent. Completion of an accredited surgical technology training program. One month of job-related experience and/or training. BLS certification from American Heart Association (AHA), American Red Cross (ARC), or Canadian equivalent, is required before start date and valid at least 60 days beyond start date . Surgical Technologist Certified - Weekends

Responsible for providing surgical assistance in the operating room under the direction of a registered nurse or other designated operating room supervisor and assisting with departmental support activities following hospital and departmental policies, procedures, and standards of care. Responsibilities: Prepares and sets up operating room. Assists surgical team during operative procedures. Performs terminal cleaning of operating rooms between cases. Completes and maintains records, reports, and other documentation related to the work, including risk management and performance improvement reports. Participates in cost containment and quality assurance programs. Required: High school diploma or equivalent Successful completion of a Surgical Technologist program or equivalent experience. BLS certification as Healthcare Provider or equivalent through the Military Training Network (MTN). Certified by the National Board of Surgical Technology & Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA). Sign on Bonus $10,000 Normal duties of the Surgical First Assistant “as defined by the American College of Surgeons, the Surgical First Assistant provides exposure, hemostasis and other technical functions that will help the surgeon carry out a safe operation with optimal results for the patients. This role may vary considerably with the surgical operation, specialty area and type of facility.” The Surgical First Assistant demonstrates advanced knowledge of normal and pathological anatomy and physiology. Essential Functions And Responsibilities Certification as a surgical technologist which provides evidence of meeting national standards in the performance of duties which demonstrates the capability of training new Colleagues/orientees. Scrubs for cases according to established sterile procedures and changes into appropriate operative attire; dons sterile gown and gloves and assist surgeon with same. Assists surgeon with draping of patient maintaining sterile technique. Provides visualization of the operative site during the operative procedure. Assists in providing hemostasis to the surgeon. Passes instruments, sponges, sutures and other sterile supplies and equipment as needed. Expedites the operative procedure by anticipating the needs of the surgeon Receives surgical specimens, places in appropriate container and fixative (if required) at end of procedure. Counts sponges, needles and instruments according to MNM policy 301700. Cleans surgical suite according to established protocol ensuring that all disposable items are placed in the appropriate bags, i.e. Biohazard Red bags for any items containing blood or body fluids. Utilized appropriate techniques to assist with the closure of body planes. Under the direction of the surgeon the Surgical First Assistant may be responsible to procure in vivo conduits (i.e. greater and lesser saphenous veins, arm veins and radial arteries) and other duties. Performs other duties consistent with purpose of job as directed by surgeon. Graduate of an accredited surgical technologist program. Credentialed by the LCC-ST as a certified first assistant. Certification as a certified first assistant. Must maintain certification status through required continuing education in related field. CST with current certification and 2 full years of first assisting experience during the last 4 years with a documented 350 surgical cases. CST with current certification who has completed an approved first assistant program and can document 350 surgical cases.
