Overview

POSITION SUMMARY - Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA):

The Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) in the Pediatric Care Unit provides developmentally appropriate, age-specific care to patients ranging from newborns (24 hours of life) through adolescents (17 years old) under the supervision of a Registered Nurse (RN). The CNA performs basic nursing care and supportive services within the CNA scope of practice, safety considerations (falls, security, infection prevention), comfort, pediatric growth and development stages, age-specific vital sign parameters, communication techniques appropriate for infants, children, and adolescents, and family-centered care principles. Responsibilities include assisting with activities of daily living (ADLs), monitoring and reporting patient conditions, obtaining vital signs, supporting diagnostic and treatment procedures, and maintaining a safe, clean, and therapeutic environment. The CNA functions as a vital member of the interdisciplinary team, ensuring compassionate, culturally sensitive, and developmentally appropriate care for pediatric patients and their families. Care is delivered in accordance with Nursing Standards of Care, safety guidelines, and Pediatric care Unit policies and procedures with Tuba City Regional Health Care Corporation Policies.

POSITION SUMMARY - Licensed Nursing Assistant (LNA):

The Licensed Nursing Assistant (LNA) provides direct, age-appropriate nursing care to pediatric patients ranging from newborn to (24 hours of age) through adolescence (less than 18 years old) under the supervision of a Registered Nurse (RN) and other medical staff. Practicing within the Arizona LNA scope of practice, the LNA performs delegated nursing assistant tasks and standardized procedures to support the plan of care, including assisting with activities of daily living, collecting and reporting vital signs, supporting treatments and procedures, participating in patient education, and maintaining accurate documentation. The LNA is expected to demonstrate advanced clinical support skills, heightened awareness of patient condition, and the ability to recognize early changes in pediatric status while delivering developmentally appropriate, family-centered care. This role contributes to a safe, therapeutic environment through adherence to infection prevention, patient, safety, and organizational standards, and functions as an integral member of the healthcare team to promote positive patient outcomes. Care is delivered in accordance with pediatric nursing standards, and regulatory requirements with Tuba City Regional Health Care Corporation policies.

        Education:

  • High School diploma or GED.

        Certification:

  • Current, active, unrestricted Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) certification (State of Arizona).
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification (American Heart Association).
  • Completion of required Patient Sitter/Observation Training (upon hire).

        Experience:

  • Completion of CNA clinical coursework/training program.

Physical:

This position is physically demanding and requires prolonged periods of standing, walking, bending, kneeling, stooping, crouching, and occasionally climbing throughout the shift. The Licensed Nursing Assistant (LNA) must be able to frequently lift, reposition, and transfer patients – including infants, toddlers, and children – and objects weighing up to 50 pounds, and occasionally lift, push, or pull up to 100 pounds with appropriate assistance and equipment. The role may require extended work hours, including weekends, in an inpatient setting. The employee must possess adequate visual and auditory acuity, including near and far vision, depth, perception, and the ability to see fine details, hear normal conversation, overhead pages, and use telephones effectively. Manual dexterity of both hands is required for both gross and fine motor tasks, including grasping, handling equipment, and frequent use of computer keyboards.

The Licensed Nursing Assistant (LNA) must demonstrate the ability to prioritize tasks, exercise sound judgment, and effectively manage multiple responsibilities in a fast-paced pediatric environment with frequent interruptions. Strong communication skills are required to interact professionally and with tact in stressful situations. The role requires the ability to maintain concentration, adapt to change priorities, and demonstrate flexibility, patience, and emotional resilience. The LNA must be capable of working closely, Sometimes crowded environments, adapting to shift work, and functioning effectively and frequently make decisions under pressure. The position also requires the ability to respond calmly to challenging situations, including managing patient or family distress and de-escalating conflict, while making appropriate decisions within scope of practice. The LNA must be able to work both independently and collaboratively as part of a healthcare team while maintaining a safe, positive, and supportive environment.

 

Environmental:

This position involves frequent exposure to infectious diseases, pediatric emergencies, and high activity, fast-paced environments. The Licensed Nursing Assistant (LNA) may also be exposed to dust, fumes, gases, loud noises, chemical agents, variations in temperature and humidity, and hazardous or moving equipment. Consistent adherence to safety protocols, infection prevention standards, and proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE) is required at all times.


Responsibilities

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS - Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA):

  1. Provides age-appropriate ADL care including bathing, feeding, toileting, dressing, and hygiene.
  2. Assists with repositioning, ambulation, and safe patient handling, including infants, toddlers, and children.
  3. Performs hourly rounding and ensures patient comfort and safety.
  4. Supports family-centered care, involving caregivers in appropriate activities
  5. Obtains and documents vital signs (temperature, pulse, respirations, blood pressure, height, and weight).
  6. Recognizes normal vs abnormal pediatric values and reports changes promptly to Registered Nurse (RN).
  7. Observes and reports: behavioral changes, discomfort associated with pain, intake and output, and responses to treatments.
  8. Assists with procedures: positioning, equipment setup, patient support, acquires needed supplies and assists RN during procedure/treatments.
  9. Prepares patient rooms and equipment for admissions, ensuring readiness for a wide range of diagnoses and procedures.
  10. Assists with specimen collection and transport as directed.
  11. Maintains a safe pediatric environment, including crib/bed safety and fall prevention.
  12. Transports patients safely using appropriate equipment, including wheelchairs, hospital bed, cribs, bassinet, and assists with patient ambulation as needed, in accordance with patient’s age and developmental level.
  13. Adhere to infection control practices, hand hygiene, and isolation precautions for patient admissions and discharges.
  14. Utilizes appropriate PPE and follows donning/doffing protocols.
  15. Supports security measures for pediatric patients (e.g. infant safety protocols, Code Pink, Code Adam, security tag/band).
  16. Assists with feeding infants and children, meal setup and meal tray deliver to patient room.
  17. Provides emotional support and comfort measures.
  18. Encourages age-appropriate activities and play.
  19. Assists in preventing skin breakdown and pressure injuries (e.g. repositioning, turning q2hrs, proper hospital bed, tape tears).
  20. Documents care accurately in the electronic health record (EHR).
  21. Reports patient information during shift hand-off communication.
  22. Performs a variety of administrative and support tasks, including answering phone calls and call lights, managing visitor communication, faxing, scheduling follow-up appointments, updating report sheets, and utilizing Microsoft Office applications; coordinates supply ordering and inventory management, including receiving and stocking deliveries, ante-room cabinets, and completing additional clerical duties as assigned.
  23. Demonstrates basic knowledge and awareness of common pediatric conditions – such as respiratory illness, hypoxia, hyperthermia/fever, dehydration, hyperbilirubinemia, failure to thrive, and post-operative care – as well as appropriate sizing of nasal cannulas based on the patients age group, and promptly reports any changes in patients condition or concerns to the registered nurse in accordance with CNA scope of practice.
  24. Communicate effectively with nurses and health care teams, patients and families (age-appropriate communication).
  25. Knowledge of pediatric care principles and developmental stages.
  26. Ability to provide compassionate, pediatric patient-centered care.
  27. Ability to recognize and respond to changes in patient conditions.
  28. Ability to function effectively in fast-paced, high-stress environments and initiates emergency measures such as basic life support.
  29. Attends all mandatory in-services, PCU staff meetings, hospital wide skills/training events, orientations, and respiratory mask fitting.
  30. Performs and is knowledgeable to other duties as assigned and floats to other units

The Licensed Nursing Assistant (LNA) performs all Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) duties with an expectation of enhanced clinical proficiency, critical thinking, and technical skill consistent with LNA licensure.   9. Performs detailed intake and output monitoring for complex cases.
  10. Completes accurate and timely documentation within LNA scope, including vital signs, intake & output, clinical observations, and patient responses to care.
  11. Performs hourly rounding and safety checks.
  12. Assists with routine and advanced procedures by preparing and organizing equipment, positioning and stabilizing pediatric patients, and supporting the RN/provider during procedures (e.g., IV starts, respiratory treatments, wound care).
  13. Assists with specimen collection, labeling, and transport per protocol.
  14. Utilizes pediatric-specific equipment safely (e.g., infant scales, warming devices, breast pump setups, swaddling infants, assisting with injections and suctioning).
  15. Newborn/Infant: monitors feeding tolerances, observing skin conditions and thermoregulation.
  16. Toddler/Preschool: assists with behavioral support, safe redirection, and hydration monitoring.
  17. School Age/Adolescent: supports age-appropriate pain assessments and reports behavioral or emotional concerns.
  18. Reinforces education provided by nursing staff to patients and families.
  19. Adheres to infection prevention standards, isolation precautions, and PPE protocols.
  20. Maintains a safe pediatric environment, including fall prevention and supervision.
  21. Ensures proper cleaning, disinfection, and storage of equipment.
  22. Responses promptly to call lights, alarms, and patient needs.
  23. Prepare patient rooms for admission and discharges.
  24. Maintains adequate supplies, including stocking and organizing deliveries.
