JOB SUMMARY

The Surgical Technologist II acts as a member of the surgical team providing patient care to the patients undergoing surgical procedures in all areas, including a variety of complex procedures, by assisting the surgeon with instrumentation. Under some supervision, prepares the appropriate instrumentation and materials for use during and on the surgical field, passing instruments, assisting with room turnover, and performs other scrub duties as directed.

Must perform all duties and responsibilities in accordance with the hospital's policies and procedures, including its Service Standards and its Code of Conduct.

Under minimal supervision, provides surgical support to physicians and patients undergoing a surgical procedure in all surgical areas including some complex cases.
Anticipates the needs of the surgeon by passing instruments, supplies and equipment in a timely manner.
Adheres to all policies and practices for safe identification and handling of specimens and medications. Has knowledge of medications and its intended use on the field. Is aware of patients' weight and maximum doses of medication when appropriate, Is aware and knows patient allergies.
Handles specimens and medications using correct technique and according to departmental policy and procedure.
Provides information related to care/preparation of surgical instruments/equipment for sterilization/disinfection procedures.
Performs the necessary surgical counts on sharps, small items, instruments and sponges with the circulating nurse prior to opening, during, and after closing the incision.
Prepares the surgical field by opening correct supplies and preparing instruments and equipment needed for the scheduled case. Assures all materials are available and in working order and verifies own skill in using equipment correctly.
Provides indirect patient care activities such as patient transportation. Assist with standard work and cleaning at completion of procedure.
Maintains aseptic technique; actively monitors situations that could lead to a breach in aseptic technique. Communicates and immediately corrects breaks in aseptic technique.
Ensures that equipment is functioning properly and immediately notifies appropriate personnel of any problems. Tests equipment prior to use on field. Adheres to the LPCHS unit policies regarding equipment maintenance.
Assists with restraining uncooperative/combative patient in a safe manner.
Serves as a role model for Surgical Tech I.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities as well as possession of any required licenses or certifications is qualifying.

Education: Completion of an accredited program recognized by the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting or formal structure surgical program (e.g., military services).

Experience: Two (2) or more years of progressively responsible and directly related work experience

License/Certification

RQI Healthcare Provider Basic Life Support
or
Basic Life Support by American Heart Association (AHA)

Utilizes quality aseptic technique when working in an unsterile or sterile role in the OR. 2. Assists the circulating RN in monitoring technique of all persons in the OR to maintain a sterile field. 3. Performs sponge, instrument, and needle counts with the circulating RN following established guidelines. 4. Assists with gowning and gloving surgeons and positioning equipment and instruments. 5. Passes sterile instruments to the surgical team during a surgical procedure. 6. Assists with transportation and positioning of the patients to include assisting the surgical team by holding retractors and position of operative limb under direction of surgeon. 7. Prepares supplies and equipment for surgical procedure following preference cards. 8. Assists with sterilization and maintenance of sterile and non-sterile supplies and equipment. 9. Monitors inventory; orders; and restocks supplies, instruments, and equipment. 10. Removes out-of-date items and discards or reprocesses following established guidelines. 11. Assists with the general cleaning duties of the department. 12. Performs equipment checks as assigned. 13. Assists with the proper recording of patient charges. 14. Call with a response time of 30 minutes. 15. Serves as a mentor to the team and supports the development of level one technologists For facilities with specialty accreditation requirements: 1. Completion of annual required education related to specialty accreditation as defined by accreditation standards . Training may be completed through CBLs, trainings , In-services, and competency validation.
