Job Description

Purpose & Scope:

Serves as a resource for Medical Assistants. The Lead Medical Assistant provides general administrative and clinical support to physicians and other practitioners. She or he ensures the clinical environment is cleaned, stocked, and ready for patient care and that medical supplies are maintained at all times. The Lead Medical Assistant assists with intake and patient flow; takes vital signs, and performs office procedures per department protocol. She/he is responsible for accurately documenting clinical activities, per procedure.

Education:

High school diploma or equivalent is preferred.

College diploma or certificate is preferred.

Experience:

Two years of healthcare/medical - primary care/office experience is required.

Certification/Licensure:

Medical Assistant Certification or Medical Assistant Credential to be obtained in six months.

BLS certification required.

The responsibilities of this job include, but are not limited to the following: Locating patients, obtaining accurate vital signs by visual and auditory measures, triaging patients, assessing patients’ medical condition, and preparing patients for physicals and medical treatment by Physicians and Nurses; Understanding and using the electronic medical record system; Ordering lab, x-ray, and medical supplies as directed; Notifying the Nurse and/or Physician when the patient is ready for exam while communicating symptoms and relaying questions about lab or x-ray needs; Assisting Nurses and Physicians with various forms of patient treatment and care; Handling Physician and Nurse requests with respect and in a timely manner; Performing lab duties as assigned; Performing phlebotomy procedures; Sterilizing and setting up instruments; Receiving and storing supplies; restocking treatment rooms as needed; Reporting to the Charge Nurse before leaving at the end of the shift; Following ancillary guidelines as deemed necessary by the Charge Nurse, Nurse Supervisor, DMS, and Physician; Adhering to established policies and procedures; Maintaining cleanliness of the treatment area and completing biological cleanup in accordance with OSHA guidelines and other maintenance assignments as directed; Washing, drying, folding, and restocking laundry; maintaining the cleanliness of the washing machine and dryer lint trap; Attending staff meetings as scheduled by the Nurse Supervisor or DMS; Operating, using, and maintaining medical and office equipment as trained; Completing assigned checklists and Policy Manager tasks within the assigned shift; Being available to assist as needed, as breaks and mealtimes may be interrupted at any time to provide necessary patient care or to maintain center operations; Fostering teamwork and ensuring a positive and professional atmosphere; Providing positive, warm, and friendly service in all interactions; Understanding and performing all duties as assigned. Documents clinically related activities accurately in the patient's EMR; performs required patient follow-up: to include pap smears Pb levels HIV mammograms and STD's. Collects and processes specimens completes requisitions and documents in logbook or other applicable forms/records. Provides escort for patients and assists with patient discharge activities. Provides chaperoning for patients per policy. Fulfills infection prevention and environmental responsibilities as assigned which many include: Light cleaning during clinic hours and cleaning of equipment. Updates appropriate records of scheduled equipment maintenance and manages drug and medical supply inventories. Provides telephone screening services to gather information from patients determine appropriate disposition and document per established telephone screening protocols. Under onsite provider supervision may insert intravenous catheter for physician initiated IV fluid therapy or administration of intravenous medications. Under direct onsite physician supervision may insert remove and monitor urinary catheter for procedures and prepare and administer oral drugs and injections limited to intradermal subcutaneous and intramuscular. May perform phlebotomy. Utilizes the EMR to propose patient medication refills for provider approval. Completes requisitions for tests (if applicable). Contacts insurance companies for Pre-authorizations for patient medications and specialty referrals including insurance authorization. Floats to other sites/locations within the system as appropriate and performs all duties at multiple sites. Attends scheduled meetings including but not limited to regular staff meetings and training classes for safety infection control OSHA CLIA BLS and others as required. Minimal Qualifications Education High School Diploma or GED required and Completion of an accredited Medical Assistant program preferred Experience Less than 1 year 6 months experience working in an ambulatory care medical office or equivalent required. externship in a medical or ambulatory health setting strongly preferred. completed externship program at medstar health may be substituted for the 6 months experience in ambulatory care medical office. preferred and For Cardiology offices only: 6 months experience working in an ambulatory care medical office or equivalent required or Bachelor's degree in exercise physiology/science or related major or successful completion of a cardiac technician course. preferred and Prior experience as a medical assistant preferred Licenses and Certifications Certified Medical Assistant (CMA)-AAMA by the American Association of Medical Assistants within 1 Year required or Registered Medical Assistant (RMA)-American Medical Technologists through American Medical Technologists within 1 Year required and CPR - Cardiac Pulmonary Resuscitation (includes BLS and NRP) for healthcare providers from either the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross within 90 Days required and Additional unit/specialty certifications may vary by department or business unit. Knowledge Skills and Abilities Clinical competency as verified within 90-day orientation period and annually thereafter. Excellent customer service/patient interaction skills.
