Job Summary and Qualifications

General Statement of Duties: 

The Surgical Technologist is responsible for assisting with the delivery of quality surgical care through planning and anticipating the surgeon/procedure needs and coordinating with the circulating perioperative nurse during surgical procedures. Demonstrates competency in surgical technology to include all major surgical specialty areas; includes gathering and preparing sterile supplies, equipment, preparing/maintaining the sterile field and assisting the surgeon by supplying sterile instruments/supplies to the sterile field in a safe and efficient manner. Performs routine scrub role as well specifically delegated department duties. Consistently follows current AORN and regulatory standards and established policies and procedures of the System. 

Minimum Education, Experience, Training, Required Knowledge, Skill, Abilities and Other Job-Related Characteristics: 

1. Education:

  • High School graduate or GED equivalent required. 
  • Graduate of a surgical technologist program OR hires prior to 9/1/2009 may substitute with 1-year experience in a hospital setting as a surgical technologist. 

2. Experience: None required (unless used in lieu of education as stated above). 

3. Employee completes initial and ongoing training and competencies as defined by service line, facility and department/unit which are specific to the needs of the patient population served (if applicable). 

Minimum License, Certificates, or Registrations Required: 

A. NON-CERTIFIED: No license, certificate or registrations required for the Sterile Processing Department All other departments no license, certificate or registration required if they meet the below provision: Per Texas HB 643, surgical technologists entering practice after 09/01/2009 must have and maintain a surgical technologist certification. Individuals that performed in a surgical technologist position prior to 09/01/2009 are not required to obtain a surgical technologist certification. 

B. CERTIFIED: Must have and maintain ONE of the following: 

  • CST – Certified Surgical Technologist through the National Board for Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) (formally the Liaison Council on Certification for the Surgical Technologist) OR 
  • TS-C- Tech in Surgery, Certified through the National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT)

Essential Job Functions: 

1. Plans for and obtains the equipment and supplies needed for assigned procedures according to physicians preference and specific patient needs.

 2. Prepares equipment and supplies according to manufacturers recommendations and specifications for uses during surgical procedures. Opens sterile packs, instruments and supplies for each procedure according to established aseptic techniques and protocols. 

3. Monitors sterile field during procedure and takes appropriate measures to insure integrity of sterile field and maintenance of sterile techniques. Initiates corrective action for any break in technique. 

4. Prepares medications and solutions for use during procedures under the direction of the Registered Nurse, according to physician’s orders. 

5. Maintains accountability for instruments, sponges and sharps, according to hospital policy throughout the surgical procedure to ensure that no foreign objects are retained in the surgical wound. Takes appropriate action if item count is not correct and informs the appropriate staff. 

6. Consistently follows safety procedures and protocols for Timeout and when handling sharp instruments, powered equipment, hazardous chemicals and lasers. 

7. Performs high-level disinfection using established policies and procedures as required.

FUNCTIONS/BEHAVIORS 1.Receives assignment for the day and checks rooms for equipment as necessary. Checks surgical posting card and surgeon preference card for supplies needed and works together with circulating nurse to open instrumentation / packs for the case in a timely manner. (E 10%) 2.Independently scrubs intermediate and complex surgical procedures in the first scrub role. PURPOSE AND SCOPE: Performs scrub and circulating duties during interventional proceduresaccording to USV/FMS policies and procedures. Assists with preparation of procedure room, inventory of supplies and stocking of supplies in the procedure room and stock room. PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Assists with the maintenance and setting up of the procedure room in compliance with FMCNA/USV policies and procedures and state and federal regulations. Stocks procedure room and procedure trays with all needed supplies and interventional equipment prior to procedure. Cleans the procedure room including the equipmentand machinery post procedure. May assist with preparing the patient for the surgical procedure by positioning, shaving and prepping. Prepares and administers medications within the scope of practice and state regulations. Performs patient transfers and positioning of patients and transports patient to and from procedure room. Acts as scrub assistant assisting the physician during interventional procedures under fluoroscopy; maintaining a sterile technique according to the established company policies and procedures and state and federal regulations. Draws up intravenous medication and labels as per Medication Labeling Policy, and Medication in the Sterile Field Competency. Performs circulating duties in the procedure room. Complies with HIPAA policies and standards in regards to patient confidentiality. Assists with maintaining environmental integrity and aesthetics. Ensures all areas are clean, sanitary and safe on a daily basis Ensures all facility equipment and instruments are in proper working condition by inspecting equipment on a daily basis before andafter procedures. May perform minor equipment repairs and general upkeep. Communicatesproblems to supervisor and documents issues in the communications log. May assist with instrument sterilization and packaging of surgical instruments. Assists with preparing, organizing, and efficiently utilizing supplies and equipment to prevent wastage. Assists with implementing USV quality goals and facility specific action plans in order to achieve USV quality standards. May print images and send to the physician. May assist with training and orienting new employees on the medical equipment. Files paperwork in patient files according to policies and procedures. May archive patient images to comply with USV policies and procedures for patient medical records and state regulations. Participates in all facility regulatory and accreditation surveys and action plans to address any deficiencies identified. Responsible for assisting the territory with marketing, educating, promoting and selling Fresenius Vascular Care services to dialysis clinics, Medical Directors, nephrologists and other pertinent members of the medical community in an assigned territory. Provides sales and relationship support to an assigned FVC territory or territories working in conjunction with the FVC Sales Management team / Clinical Specialist, or Regional Director of Sales identifying new accounts for Fresenius Vascular Care services to generate revenue. Establish and maintains a close relationship with current user accounts/customers, and researches the local physician market to identify potential candidates/customers for FVC services making the necessary sales calls to these potential customers under the direction of the Regional Director of Sales & Marketing to grow the number of patient procedures performed at the FVC ambulatory centers. Maintains knowledge of the vascular care business and services programs provided by FVC as well as the competitors in the local market Acts as the customer relations contact and liaison between the dialysis clinics, specialty clinics and the FVC Center Occasional evening and weekend hours may be required Review and comply with the Code of Business Conduct and all applicable company policies and procedures, local, state and federal laws and regulations. Assist with various projects as assigned by direct supervisor.Other duties as assigned. Additional responsibilities may include focus on one or more departments or locations. Significant travel (up to 50%) within the assigned geography/region may be necessary. EDUCATION : High School Diploma required Surgical Technologist Certification, preferred. EXPERIENCE AND REQUIRED SKILLS: 1 - 2 years' related experience. Previous patient care experiencepreferred. Working knowledgeof interventional equipment (including C-Arm and Ultrasound equipment), procedures and materials/supplies needed for each procedure. Knowledge of sterile techniques. Experience with special procedures utilizinga C-Arm preferred. Knowledge of universal precautions and personal protective devices to be utilized when operating radiology systems.
