Job Description:

Purpose of Job:

Improve the overall health of the communities we serve by managing patient care at assigned medical clinic by performing the following duties:

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Greets variety of patients and escorts to exam room; informs patient of time delays throughout visit.

  • Prepares patients for provider; anticipates needs of provider to maintain efficient patient flow.

  • Performs phlebotomy and laboratory procedures as directed by provider.

  • Performs and documents injections and immunizations.

  • Ensures exam rooms are clean, stocked, and ready for patients.

  • Cleans, prepares, and sterilizes instruments.

  • Assists provider with procedures, exams and patient education. 

  • Obtains prescription refills under the direction and authorization of provider.

  • Manages appropriate patient referrals and required documentation.

  • Observes and follows required safety protocols, including handling and disposal of sharps, use of personal protective equipment, exposure to blood borne pathogens, and general safety of employees and patients.    

  • Answers telephones, schedules patients, and supports care team members.

  • Performs other duties assigned, including supporting the CHAS Health Mission and Core Values.

Qualifications:                    

Education/Experience: Completion of medical assistant training through an apprenticeship program registered and approved by the WA Department of Labor & Industries or college program accredited by the Accrediting Bureau of Health Education School (ABHES) or the Commission of Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) required. Certification through the American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA), National Healthcareer Association (NHA) or National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT) required within 120 days of hire. Washington locations also require a Medical Assistant – Certified credential issued by Washington State Department of Health. Previous experience in a community health clinic preferred.  Experience with EHR preferred.

                                

Skills: Excellent customer service, oral and written communications skills required.  Compassion for patients required. Must be able to work well in team environment. Ability to multi-task in fast-paced work environment, with ability to anticipate future needs. Basic computer user skills required.  Medical terminology and accurate spelling ability required. BLS (CPR/AED) required. Commitment to supporting a safe and respectful environment is required.

Physical Demands:

Medical Assistants are required to stand, sit, and be mobile one-third to two-thirds of the time.  They are required to use hands to finger, handle or feel over two-thirds of the time, as well as reach with hands and arms.  Climbing or balancing occurs less than one-third of the time; while stooping, kneeling or crouching occurs between one-third and two-thirds of the day.  Communicating by talking / hearing occurs over two-thirds of the day. Amount of time spent lifting or exerting force is about 50% for up to 10 pounds and less than one-third of the time up to 25 pounds.  Rarely is there a need to lift more than 26 pounds.

Conduct patient registration, which includes securing required paperwork and insurance documentation, and verification of insurance and patient eligibility. Process co-pays and schedule patient appointments for assigned center. Coordinate provider referrals to assigned Specialist. Answer patient questions regarding their care and keep them informed of their status. Inform technical staff of patient flow. Prepare patients for examination, which includes conducting interviews to verify patient information, record medical history; confirm purpose of visit; Perform preliminary physical test (blood pressure, weight, temperature, etc.) for vital signs and escalate critical cases to provider as needed. Conduct point of care testing as needed (i.e., flu, strep, urinalysis, ECG, HCG); and provide patient information to provider. Responsible for stocking supplies and maintenance of exam rooms, front desk, and reception area; ensure providers have medical supplies needed. Responsible for completing order sheets to maintain supply inventory levels; regularly check expiration dates on supplies. Responsible for maintenance of medical records and scanning charts to patient files. Answer phone calls, collect and sort daily incoming and outgoing postal correspondence Ensure reception is well maintained Conduct courtesy call-backs for patient follow-up. Perform opening and closing duties, which includes cashing out, end-of-day communication, and securing the building. Follow operating instructions to perform and document daily controls and calibration of equipment; maintain Quality Assurance/Quality Control logs for equipment troubleshoot breakdowns, perform preventive maintenance, and submit repair tickets as needed. Using excellent customer service and communications skills, your primary duties in this role include: Medical Assistant (float) support in clinic. Supporting a variety of providers as needed. Covering call outs/PTO and supporting team in the day (cover breaks/lunches). Admin support when not covering a provider Responsible for assisting the medical staff by collecting information, escorting patients to exam rooms, and preparing patients for examination. Assisting with procedures and performing related tests/monitoring. Scheduling appointments for new and established patients as needed. Maintains a comfortable, orderly, safe, and clean environment. Utilizes EMR to process prescriptions, retrieve test results, and patient files. Update records as needed. Cross-trained in multiple areas and/or assigned additional clinic duties. Assisting with the overall delivery of patient care in the department. Other duties as assigned. Salary: Hiring range, based on experience and credentials : Level I: $25.17-$34.05 per hour. Level II: $27.69-$37.46 per hour. Level III: $30.45-$41.20 per hour. Workdays: Workdays will be Monday-Friday (7:30am-4:00 pm) Possibility of 4/10hr shifts TBD. Qualifications that support success in this role are based on education, experience and values including: Minimum of one (2) years of previous experience as a Medical Assistant is strongly preferred. Certification through a national agency such as AAMA, NCCT, etc. is strongly preferred. Current CPR/BLS within 60 days of hire. ACLS may be required by specialty. Prior Electronic Medical Record (EMR) experience is strongly preferred. EPIC experience is a plus! Excellent attendance and work ethic. Positive attitude and desire to be a team player. Ability to communicate professionally and effectively with patients, physicians, and other team members. A commitment to patient-focused care, privacy, and safety.
