Summary:

Under general supervision, the Lactation Consultant RN provides safe, family-centered, culturally appropriate patient care by assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating lactation plans for the breastfeeding/chest-feeding dyad and the pumping parent. Performs inpatient consultations, telephone triage, and prenatal education as appropriate.

Uses current evidence to develop feeding plans that address individual feeding issues while respecting the family’s feeding goals.

Assesses the adequacy of breastfeeding and provides interventions as necessary.

Assists parents of infants who cannot breastfeed to establish and maintain a milk supply and to store their milk appropriately.

Evaluates and documents the patient’s response to care and initiates independent and/or collaborative changes where appropriate.

Collaborates with the interdisciplinary team and the outpatient Lactation Consultant to provide continuity of care upon discharge.

Teaches, coaches, supports, and mentors nursing staff and other healthcare learners to promote evidence-based clinical practice and support breastfeeding skills.

Operates various equipment including portable cardiac monitors, bedside commodes, etc. Provides routine nursing care such as starting IVs, performing dressing changes, etc. for multiple patients in a timely manner. Assists in critical situations including administering CPR. Administers and evaluates medication therapies, performs patient transfers, and transports patients via wheelchair, hospital bed, or stretcher to other departments. The incumbent may be asked to perform additional duties as assigned. QUALIFICATIONS Education: Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing required. 4 Year/Bachelor’s Degree preferred. Experience: 1 year of relevant experience preferred. Refer to the Life Support Training Policy for additional details. Licensure: Current RN licensure in applicable state required. CPI certification within three months of hire required for Behavioral Health, Emergency Department, and Central Staffing and Scheduling Office (CSSO). If your RN nursing license has been inactive, retired or lapsed for five years or more and you have not been licensed in another state during the last five years, successful completion of a Board approved refresher course is required prior to reactivating or reinstating your license. In order to be considered for current licensure status, you must apply for reinstatement within one year of completing the refresher course. Additional Skills/Requirements Required : Ability to perform basic nursing skills on groups of patients and ability to assume charge responsibility. Ability to multitask and prioritize quickly. Ability to administer medication utilizing the five rights. Ability to communicate verbally and in written form. Basic computer knowledge. Ability to safely and effectively care for all patient populations which present to the department. Individual compensation will be determined by the selected candidate's qualifications, previous work experience, and/or education.
