The University of Miami/UHealth Department of Orthopaedics has an exciting opportunity for a full time Medical Assistant 2 to work in Plantation, FL. The Medical Assistant (MA) 2 will perform multi-skilled tasks to assist the medical providers. The MA 2 shall assist patients’ healthcare management and clinical procedures in a culturally competent manner utilizing evidence-based standards of quality, safety, and service. The MA 2 provides hands-on care to patients while adhering to regulatory requirements, standards of care, and institutional policies and procedures, under the direct supervision and responsibility of a licensed physician. The physician in charge may delegate the tasks to oversee the MA 2 to a Nurse or Designee in charge of the unit/clinic.  The MA 2 shall adhere to ethical and legal standards of professional practice, recognize, respond to emergencies, and demonstrate professionalism. The MA 2 provides care within the philosophy, mission, vision, and values, as well as within the policies and procedures of the Department of Nursing and the University of Miami. As a professional, monitors the quality of care provided and nurtures a compassionate and healing environment. The MA 2 works directly with the Nurse Manager/Nurse Supervisor/Charge Nurse and/or the Designee in charge of the Unit or Clinic to ensure a safe delivery of care that supports the UHealth mission. CORE JOB FUNCTIONS

1. Utilizes creative methods to support patient’s individual needs and respect patient’s spiritual beliefs, faith, and practices.

6. Ensures compliance with all State and Federal regulatory guidelines to include Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA).

7. Performs professionally within their clinical scope of practice skills utilizing State, Federal, and University of Miami’s standards, guidelines, relevant statues, rules, and regulations. Incorporates protocols and standards of care into daily practice.

8. Accepts and provides focused constructive feedback and guidance with loving kindness in a manner that provides growth and maintains self-esteem.

9. Abides by the standards for ethical behavior, therapeutic communication and protecting the privacy of patient information.

10. Assists providers with physical examinations by preparing treatment/exam room with proper supplies, instruments, and materials, as directed.

11. Understands the importance of medical and surgical asepsis. Prepares patients for physician’s care with basic instruction and information regarding examination procedures.

12. Perform vital signs, EKG, phlebotomy, and document in patient’s medical record.

13. Cleans and/or sterilizes medical instruments while observing principles of sterile technique. Schedules patients for tests and completes required forms for laboratory work.

14. Maintains accurate and complete patient records and documentation. Orders, stocks, and inventories supplies, and assists in performing clerical duties. 15. Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets.

Education:

• High School Diploma or equivalent/relevant experience, certification or license

Certification and Licensing:

• Approved MA Certifications:

• CMA- Certified Medical Assistant - American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA)®

• RMA- Registered Medical Assistant - American Medical Technologists (AMT)

• CCMA- Certified Clinical Medical Assistant- National Healthcare Association (NHA)

• NCMA - National Certified Medical Assistant (NHA - NCCT)

• NRCMA - Nationally Registered Certified Medical Assistant (NAHP)

Additional certification:

• American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) for healthcare providers

• HIV & AIDS Certification: Florida HIV/AIDS Healthcare Professional Continue Education (CE) Certification Florida: HIV/AIDS Training for Healthcare Professionals

Experience:

• Minimum 2 years of relevant experience required

DEPARTMENT ADDENDUM

Department Specific Functions

1. May require travel to multiple clinic sites throughout the week. 

2. Maintains high level of customer service.  Excellent patient relations are an essential component of this position.

3. Provides clinical support to physicians and other medical providers. Assists with minor procedures as needed.  Also assists with medication, medical supplies and equipment as needed.

4. Removes sutures/staples, assists in wound care under the direct supervision of a physician.

5. Assesses, applies, and removes casts, splints, and other orthopaedic devices if necessary.

6. Coordinates patient flow in/out of the pod with the goal of and emphasis on minimizing waiting time for the patients.

7. Prepares patient (provides gowns, assists patient), area, and medications for procedures.

8. Maintains exam rooms and cast room fully stocked and ensures that rooms are cleaned after each patient.  Uses, maintains and cleans medical equipment.

9. Obtains authorizations for special procedures, etc. from insurance companies.  Labels, processes and ships aspirations and needle biopsies. 

10. Assists physician in obtaining pertinent medical information from the patient and is always readily available to the physician throughout the examination to facilitate the management of patient care.

11. Handles all medical emergencies in a timely and competent manner always putting patients’ safety first. 

12. Receives and records requests from patients by telephone (medication refills, referral requests, lab results, medical advice, etc.).

13. Other relevant duties as assigned by supervisor.
