Carolina Air Care is a CAMTS accredited critical care and emergency transportation agency serving North Carolina and surrounding areas since 1986. Our assets are comprised of four helicopters as well as a fleet of ambulances dispatched by our communications center "Flightwatch" – all operating 24 hours a day.

Helicopter bases are located in Burlington, Aberdeen, Goldsboro, and Rocky Mount. Rotor wing aircraft are staffed with one nurse and one paramedic. They respond to both emergency scene requests as well as interfacility transfers of critically ill patients Our ground assets are located throughout the Triangle.

In addition to the Critical Care Transport teams for the majority of our missions, we also have two dedicated Neonatal Specialty Care Teams, which care for our smallest patients.

Along with our Medical Directors, the Education Team ensures that the high standards of Carolina Air Care are maintained through continuing education, evidence-based medicine, equipment training, high fidelity simulations, research studies, and new hire assessments.

Summary:

Provides competent clinical nursing care consistent with professional standards. Reporting and accountable to the Nurse Manager/Director, the Clinical Nurse is responsible for coordinating and delivering patient care utilizing the nursing process in a hospital setting.

This position is 36 hours per week, rotating shifts and rotating bases with Carolina Air Care Pediatric / Neonatal Critical Care Transport Team. The work environment is a helicopter and ground ambulance with some time spent outdoors. Must be able to work in this environment with no restrictions and due to air craft safety regulations, there is a weight restriction and fit for duty requirement i.e. weight 215 pounds or less and ability to lift 150 pounds with assistance.

Successful candidate will have recent experience in Neonatal and/or Pediatric ICU with 3 years minimum and 5 years preferred.

Responsibilities:
1. Education - Participates in identifying and meeting learning needs of self. Attends education programs based on identified learning needs. With assistance, uses patient education materials relevant to patient population. Assesses readiness to learn of the patient/family/caregivers. Assesses developmental level of patient and factors affecting ability to learn.
2. Evaluation of Care - Identifies expected patient outcomes. Seeks guidance as needed in revision of plan of care. Participates in discussion with members of the interdisciplinary team in evaluation of patient care. Communicates relevant information to promote continuity of care.
3. Implementation - Demonstrates competence in care of patients with complex problems, including population-appropriate physical, psychosocial, educational and safety aspects of care. Performs bedside point of care testing as required for patient care plan. Utilizes healthcare organization and nursing standards, policies and procedures in delivery of care. Organizes and prioritizes care according to patient/family needs. Consults with appropriate resources in a timely fashion regarding patients with complex care issues, unusual teaching needs and/or those at high risk for discharge planning.
4. Leadership - With assistance, develops goals to promote professional growth or minimize limitations. Achieves goals and objectives within identified time frame or renegotiates with supervisor. Is knowledgeable about activities which facilitate intra/interdepartmental collaboration. Participates in development and achievement of unit goals and performance improvement activities. Effectively uses communication systems. Participates in promoting cost-effective care. Gives feedback to co-workers. Is aware of public policy and regulatory guidelines affecting the health care environment. Promotes a safe, clean and secure hospital environment for all.
5. Patient Assessment - Recognizes data from complex situations to determine priorities for care. Includes appropriate physical, psychosocial, education and safety needs. Synthesizes assessment data into meaningful whole prior to communication to others. Assesses and anticipates discharge needs of individual patients and families. Develops relationships with families that promote their ability to advocate for the patient and their own needs.
6. Planning - Collaborates with patient/family to prepare or update the plan of care. Makes use of available multidisciplinary resources in planning care. Begins to use full range of communication as a means to convey planning. Identifies and addresses cultural and ethnic issues in planning patient care. Demonstrates ability to prioritize tasks for patients with complex problems.
7. Research - Reads journals that contain studies or articles that may be applicable to practice. Brings ideas and questions to the staff at large for assessment of applicability.

● Graduation from a school of professional nursing.
● If hired after January 6, 2014, must be enrolled within four years of employment, and obtain a Bachelor's degree with a major in Nursing or a Master's degree with a major in Nursing within seven years of employment date.

  • Licensed to practice as a Registered Nurse in the state of North Carolina.
  • Current AHA Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), BLS–Healthcare Provider, and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) provider required prior to interview.

Speaks knowledgeably about Option Care’s scope of services and effectively instructs patients about related financial obligations for care and service charges. Attends and completes required training modules, in-services, and continuing education to maintain competency and professional licensure for demonstrated knowledge regarding the care and management of patients in the home and/or alternate care settings. Effectively provides oversight and coordination of paraprofessionals in the home setting and may act as the Supervisor in the absence of the Supervisor or Nurse Manager as applicable in accordance with state and federal regulations. Participates in multidisciplinary team conferences and provides precepting, training, and mentoring to other nurses for orientation, and onboarding and supervisory activities as assigned. Participates in nursing department on-call responsibilities. Performs other related duties as directed by supervisor. If applicable: Inserts PICC/Midlines per physician order. Troubleshoots/declots obstructed central line catheters. Monitors PICC/Midline and educates on prevention of line infection and routine care. Advanced certification and training as applicable. Required licensure to operate a motor vehicle in the state of practice with access to a vehicle for business travel with proof of liability insurance. Basic knowledge of computer operating systems and software applications with the abilityn self-evaluation for annual appraisal and jointly sets professional growth goals with nurse manager. to apply knowledge in the effective use of nursing technology tools to communicate and document care provided.
