A caregiver in this role works nights from 7:00 p.m. – 7:30 a.m. or 11:00 p.m. – 7:30 a.m. with rotating weekend requirements and 3 holiday shifts per year. A caregiver who excels in this role will: Prepare units, patient rooms and patient beds for receiving patient admission, returning surgical patients, transfer or emergencies. Provide and document assigned care, such as bathing, changing/refreshing bed linens, dressing/undressing, back rubs, etc. Take and document the patient's temperature, pulse, respirations, blood pressure, pulse oximetry, weight and height. Perform treatment procedures, such as venous blood draws, enemas, application of ice and heat packs, non-sterile compresses, skin preps, setting up oxygen equipment, bed scale weights, setting up overhead trapeze and Buck’s traction and removing urinary foley catheters. Prepare patients for meals, assist in feeding patients if necessary and distribute water and other nourishments according to patient needs in compliance with physician orders. Assist with pre-operative and post-operative care, such as turning and positioning patients with proper body mechanics, applying/utilizing special equipment and ambulating the patient as directed in a safe, prescribed manner. Assist and accompany patients during admission, transfer and discharge. Perform hourly safety rounds, anticipate patient needs and respond to patient call lights promptly. Collect, properly label and transport specimens to proper area. Assist in keeping patient rooms in order, reporting equipment that is out of order, cleaning equipment (as assigned) and mandatory inventory and distributing unit linen and supplies. Document patient care in the electronic medical record. Complete ongoing competency requirements, education programs and mandatory training to maintain certification and/or licensure.
