Nurse Practitioner (NP) Responsibilities

Provide primary and preventative care to patients in collaboration with physicians and healthcare staff
Conduct physical exams, order diagnostic tests, and interpret results
Develop and manage patient treatment plans
Prescribe medications as appropriate
Educate patients and families on treatment, health maintenance, and disease prevention
Maintain accurate patient records and documentation in compliance with regulations

How you make a difference The Nurse Practitioner (NP) under the supervision of the Site Medical Director and other site Physicians, offers a comprehensive range of medical services to incarcerated patients in accordance with established policy and state guidelines. They ensure necessary documentation of services is provided to the Site Medical Director or designee to monitor the provision of clinical services. Additionally, they communicate scheduling changes to the Medical Director and H.S.A. and make arrangements for coverage of medical services if unavailable for an extended period of time. Key Responsibilities Provides medical care to inmates, including conducting exams, chronic care clinics, and infirmary rounds. Maintains accurate and legible progress note documentation in SOAP format and adheres to formulary guidelines. Responds to emergencies and makes logical decisions regarding non-formulary drugs or off-site referrals. Supports existing policies and procedures for admission, transfer, and specialty consultant referrals. Maintains confidentiality and provides input into facility committees as requested. The clinic provides a range of services, from well-child care to walk-in care, as well as educational and outreach programs. Providers care for children with complex medical and psychosocial issues, manage acute and chronic childhood illnesses, and provide parental guidance for childhood development and nutrition. We offer wrap-around services in our clinic, including Integrated Behavioral Health providers, interpreter services, a clinical pharmacist on-site, access to Adolescent Health and Gender health providers, along with resource navigators through a program called Community Connect. In the clinic, we see approximately 20,000 visits annually staffed by 9 physicians and 5 nurse practitioners. Advanced practice providers provide a range of services, from well-child care, sports physicals, management of acute and chronic illnesses, and addressing nutritional, developmental, and behavioral concerns. Providers should have a particular interest in providing trauma-informed, weight-inclusive, and culturally competent care.
