Registered Nurse, Operating Room

Monday – Friday; 4x10 hour shifts, 6:00am – 6:30pm

The Outpatient Surgery Center (OSC) At Dartmouth Hitchcock is a free standing center located on the DHMC Lebanon campus. The OSC operates eight operating room suites and is dedicated to providing care for adult and pediatric patients requiring same-day surgical procedures. The ultimate goal of the OSC is to provide the right care in the right place and the right time for our patients who seek our surgical services.

The Registered Nurse is a key member of the surgical team who may function in a circulator or scrubbing capacity. Current services include ENT, orthopedics, plastic surgery, urology, ophthalmology, gynecology, and general surgery. Outpatient Surgery experience preferred and the desire to work as a team member in an efficient, patient centered environment a must. Computer experience preferred as well as the ability to adapt to a rapidly changing environment. The OSC is growing and needs an individual that can function clinically as well as be a part of designing OSC processes for the future

The ideal candidate must be a team player, enthusiastic and willing to be flexible to meet case volume needs. 10hr shifts, 7:00AM - 5:30PM

The OSC Operating Room RN is directly responsible for performing the roles and responsibilities of the circulating and/or scrub nurse in the operating room. The RN will provide direct patient care in accordance with OSC policies and AORN standards. Responsibilities include but are not limited to: maintaining a safe surgical environment; fiscal stewardship of supplies, materials and resources; continuing education for self and new employees; active involvement in quality and process improvement activities. The OR RN in the OSC is part of a team environment.

Responsibilities

Utilizes the nursing process to assess, diagnose, identify outcomes, plan, implement and evaluate an individualized plan of care.

Utilizes critical thinking and the nursing process to anticipate and recognize changes in patient status, taking action to modify the plan of care or to elevate to the care team as necessary.

Practices in accordance with the ANA Code of Ethics to advocate for patients, uphold their autonomy in decision-making, ensure informed consent and assist patients in families in expressing self-determination.

Actively seeks feedback and acts to improve performance. Engages in the governance of practice.

Manages interpersonal relationships for self and with others. Mentors colleagues for the advancement of nursing practice and the profession.

Assumes authority and accountability for the nursing care of patients while appropriately delegating elements of care to others members of the care delivery team in accordance with laws, regulations and policies and procedures.

Prioritizes and organizes time to optimize patient outcomes.

Actively seeks out the most current evidence and standards and applies and translates to daily practice. Role models a culture of inquiry, developing new knowledge by contributing to research, quality improvement, and evidence-based practice at the local level.

Communicates effectively in a variety of formats in all areas of practice. Actively partners with others to effect change that produces positive outcomes through the exchange of knowledge. Precepts the student nurse, nurse extern, nurse resident, experienced clinical nurse and other members of the healthcare team.

Qualifications

Graduate from an accredited Nursing Program
Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing (BSN) preferred with at least 1 year of experience.
Associate Degree (ADN) prepared nurses with 2 years'

Required Licensure/Certifications

Licensed Registered Nurse with New Hampshire
BLS upon hire.
Advanced Life Support (ACLS) required within six months of hire date.
Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) preferred, required within six months upon hire

Care Coordination/Collaboration/Communication Bring pertinent information obtain during chart review and patient interview to the care team. Overview The Circulating RN Works collaboratively with Surgical Team to ensure patient safety and positive patient outcomes. Monitor Surgical cases for continued sterility, and support surgical team from outside the sterile field. Thorough and complete intra-operative documentation, as well as case set up and preparation. This specialty works while adhering to AORN standards and practices. Call schedule (after training is complete) for overbook and emergent cases only and at a small critical access hospital with two OR’s and one endoscopy suite. Variable days into evening M-F with no holiday or weekend regular hours. Responsibilities General Clinical Practice Utilizes the nursing process in caring for all patients, to include: assessing symptoms, planning interventions, implementing treatment plans, evaluating responses to interventions, and revising plan based on overall effectiveness.
