Job Summary

Summary
Utilizing the nursing process, responsibility for providing for immediate and long-term nursing care needs of patients within the standards of the department, hospital and regulatory agencies.

Accurately plans nursing interventions for assigned patients.
Modifies and individualizes Nursing Plan of Care and protocols.
Participates in the development of the multidisciplinary treatment plan.
Demonstrates ability to prioritize patient care needs.
Partners with patients/families to support recovery goals.
Provides and implements nursing care interventions.
Establishes a therapeutic alliance with assigned patients.
Demonstrates safe, accurate and timely medication administration using BMV scanning.
Reviews physician orders in a timely manner.
Promotes interventions that provide the least-restrictive alternatives and recovery-oriented goals.
Participates in leading patient groups.
Accurately evaluates the effectiveness of nursing care interventions.
Documentation on the Nursing Plan of Care, protocols, and Assessment Flowsheet reflects response to intervention, demonstrates an understanding of patients’ response to treatment interventions.
Accurately communicate patients’ clinical status at clinical team rounds and change of shift reports.
Utilizes evidence-based nursing knowledge to guide practice decisions.
Provides a leadership role in organizing and providing patient care.
Provides direction and supervision of MHSs.
Delegate care interventions.
Assumes a leadership role in medical and psychiatric emergencies.
Promotes/provides for critical incident de-briefing following emergency event.
Anticipates acute milieu problems and delegates staff appropriately.
Participates in the training and education of RNs, MHSs, and other healthcare providers.
Provides for teaching needs of patient and significant others.
Provides health teaching related to patient needs and recovery goals.
Documents teaching in the patient’s record.

Demonstrates fiscal responsibility via monitoring of salaries and supply expenses, prepares and submits Corrective Action Plans on time and on schedule. 5. Develops capital budgets in collaboration with medical staff for assigned units/areas. 6. Educates staff regarding unit and medical center budgets in order to promote awareness and instill accountability for the financial performance of the unit. Seeks medical leadership and staff feedback on changes that impact such performance. Quality, Safety and Experience Improvements 1. Responsible for VMS safety, quality idea boards on unit. 2. Accountable for the execution of daily and shift safety and clinical care huddles. 3. Rounds on existing and new patients, addressing issues or concerns of patients and/or families on the unit. 4. Responsible for the closure of Safety Intelligence reports and appropriate Corrective Action Plans in place. Responsible for reporting all Serious Reporting Events (SRE) to leadership and provide feedback to staff on results. 5. Links departmental goals to department of nursing/organizational goals and strategic plans. II. Position Qualifications: License/Certification/Education: Required: 1. Master of Science in Nursing (MSN), or Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) with employee currently enrolled in a qualified MSN program. 2. Responsible for the planning, delivery and management of direct patient care utilizing the nursing process and adhering to the standards of nursing practice. I. Major Responsibilities: 1. Utilizes the Nursing Process for the delivery and management of patient’s care from Admission to Discharge, appropriate to the developmental age of the patient population. 2. Performs patient assessment/reassessment according to standard procedure. 3. Develops and coordinates individual plan of care including discharge planning. 4. Directs, supervises, coordinates and evaluate nursing care within assigned clinical setting. 5. Delegates appropriately to others in accordance with job description and competency level. 6. Documents patient care according to standard procedure. All responsibilities are essential job functions. II. Position Qualifications: License/Certification/Education: Required: 1. Current Massachusetts Nursing licensure and registration. 2. BLS through either American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross (ARC) is a requirement for every RN within 30 days of hire. 3. ACLS through American Heart Association (AHA) required in select areas (Gannett, MP1, ICU, ED, Cath Lab, Endo, IR, PACU, Float Pool) within 6 months or first scheduled course offering whichever is sooner. 4. PALS through American Heart Association (AHA) required in select areas (PACU, ED) within 6 months or first scheduled course offering whichever is sooner. 5. NRP Advanced Provider through American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) required in select areas (Maternity) within 6 months or first scheduled course offering whichever is sooner. Preferred: 1. Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing highly preferred. Experience/Skills: Required: 1. Thorough knowledge of the discipline of Nursing. Unless certification, licensure or registration is required, an equivalent combination of education and experience which provides proficiency in the areas of responsibility listed in this description may be substituted for the above requirements. Department-specific competencies and their measurements will be developed and maintained in the individual departments. The competencies will be maintained and attached to the departmental job description. Responsible managers will review competencies with position incumbents.
