Are you an experienced critical care nurse ready to take the next step in your nursing career? UNC Health REX is seeking a Clinical Nurse IV Team Lead to join our 5 HV Cardiovascular Surgical Intensive Care Unit (CSICU), located within the Heart and Vascular Hospital.

Our 10-bed CSICU provides highly specialized care to complex cardiovascular and surgical patients requiring intensive monitoring and advanced critical care interventions. The 5 HV Cardiovascular Surgical Intensive Care Unit specializes in caring for patients requiring:

  • Postoperative cardiothoracic surgery recovery
  • Complex vascular surgery recovery
  • Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO)
  • Advanced hemodynamic monitoring
  • Mechanical circulatory support
  • High-acuity cardiovascular critical care
  • Intensive care interventions for critically ill surgical patients

Our patients range from young adults to geriatric patients and often require complex, highly specialized care throughout their critical illness and recovery.

Care is delivered through a collaborative interdisciplinary team that includes Clinical Nurses, physicians, Advanced Practice Providers, pharmacists, respiratory therapists, perfusionists, care managers, chaplains, patient care technicians, and other specialized cardiovascular care professionals.

The Clinical Nurse IV Team Lead is a key clinical leader within the CSICU, providing advanced nursing care while supporting the team, coordinating patient care, and promoting professional nursing practice.

This role is ideal for an experienced critical care nurse who is ready to lead by example, mentor others, support complex clinical decision-making, and help drive positive outcomes for patients and staff.

🩺 Clinical Leadership Responsibilities – Approximately 70%

As a Clinical Nurse IV Team Lead, you will:

  • Provide expert, evidence-based nursing care to complex cardiovascular and surgical patients
  • Serve as a clinical resource, mentor, and role model for nursing staff
  • Serve as Charge Nurse, coordinating daily unit operations, assignments, patient flow, and patient safety
  • Support nurses managing complex cardiovascular and critical care patients
  • Assist staff with clinical prioritization, critical thinking, and escalation of care
  • Recognize and respond to changes in patient condition and facilitate appropriate interventions
  • Support care of patients requiring advanced therapies, including ECMO and mechanical circulatory support
  • Precept, mentor, and support nurses throughout their professional development
  • Promote safe, evidence-based nursing practice and adherence to clinical standards
  • Collaborate with physicians, APPs, respiratory therapists, perfusionists, pharmacists, and other interdisciplinary team members

🩺 Who We’re Looking For

We’re looking for an experienced critical care nurse who demonstrates strong clinical judgment, leadership skills, and a commitment to exceptional patient care.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 2–5 years of nursing experience, preferably in ICU, CVICU, Surgical ICU, or another high-acuity critical care setting
  • Previous charge nurse and/or nursing leadership experience
  • Strong cardiovascular assessment and critical care clinical judgment
  • Experience caring for postoperative cardiothoracic or vascular surgery patients
  • Experience or exposure to ECMO, mechanical circulatory support, ventilator management, and advanced hemodynamic monitoring
  • Demonstrated ability to mentor, coach, and support fellow nurses
  • Excellent communication and interdisciplinary collaboration skills
  • Commitment to evidence-based practice, patient safety, and professional development

Serves as nursing Team Leader. Provides education, training, and oversight to assigned nursing staff.


Responsibilities:
1. EDUCATION AND PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT - Coordinates, designs and implements educational programs to meet identified learning needs of staff, patients and families. Ensures appropriate and adequate clinical staffing and skill mix to meet patient care needs on own shift and upcoming shift. Effectively uses clinical and financial information to assist Nurse Manager to establish and meet budgetary goals. Collaborates with Nurse Manager to implement strategies to increase revenue and cost-effectively manage personnel, supply and equipment resources. Evaluates the impact of strategic fiscal changes on quality outcomes. Assists Nurse Manager to ensure that internal and external regulatory standards are met or exceeded.
7. RESEARCH AND PERFORMANCE IMPROVEMENT - Collaborates with Nurse Manager to evaluate research that is applicable to practice and promotes changes in standards of care as appropriate. Guides research development and implementation. Utilizes resources in asking research questions and applying appropriate research methods. Shares knowledge with colleagues through publication, presentations or other means. Develops, implements and evaluates new and creative approaches to meeting goals. Leads, participates and promotes performance improvement initiatives that focus on identified patient safety or quality of care opportunities.

UNC Johnston Endoscopy is a fast-paced procedural unit located in Smithfield. It is a hospital-based endoscopy department. There is an enormous number of opportunities for medical professionals to grow, learn and develop into GI experts. Currently we operate up to 2 procedural rooms daily: with an average case load of 12 cases per day. Our hours of operation are Monday- Friday from 7:30 – 4pm with some rotating on call time Monday – Friday after hours of operation. We also have a phenomenal team of doctors. Summary: Provides competent clinical nursing care consistent with professional standards. Reporting and accountable to the Nurse Manager/Director, the Clinical Nurse is responsible for coordinating and delivering patient care utilizing the nursing process in a hospital setting. Responsibilities: 1. Education - Participates in identifying and meeting learning needs of self. Attends education programs based on identified learning needs. With assistance, uses patient education materials relevant to patient population. Assesses readiness to learn of the patient/family/caregivers. Assesses developmental level of patient and factors affecting ability to learn. 2. Evaluation of Care - Identifies expected patient outcomes. Seeks guidance as needed in revision of plan of care. Participates in discussion with members of the interdisciplinary team in evaluation of patient care. Communicates relevant information to promote continuity of care. 3. Implementation - Demonstrates competence in care of patients with complex problems, including population-appropriate physical, psychosocial, educational and safety aspects of care. Performs bedside point of care testing as required for patient care plan. Utilizes healthcare organization and nursing standards, policies and procedures in delivery of care. Organizes and prioritizes care according to patient/family needs. Consults with appropriate resources in a timely fashion regarding patients with complex care issues, unusual teaching needs and/or those at high risk for discharge planning. 4. Leadership - With assistance, develops goals to promote professional growth or minimize limitations. Achieves goals and objectives within identified time frame or renegotiates with supervisor. Is knowledgeable about activities which facilitate intra/interdepartmental collaboration. Participates in development and achievement of unit goals and performance improvement activities. Effectively uses communication systems. Participates in promoting cost-effective care. Gives feedback to co-workers. Is aware of public policy and regulatory guidelines affecting the health care environment. Promotes a safe, clean and secure hospital environment for all. 5. Patient Assessment - Recognizes data from complex situations to determine priorities for care. Includes appropriate physical, psychosocial, education and safety needs. Synthesizes assessment data into meaningful whole prior to communication to others. Assesses and anticipates discharge needs of individual patients and families. Develops relationships with families that promote their ability to advocate for the patient and their own needs. 6. Planning - Collaborates with patient/family to prepare or update the plan of care. Makes use of available multidisciplinary resources in planning care. Begins to use full range of communication as a means to convey planning. Identifies and addresses cultural and ethnic issues in planning patient care. Demonstrates ability to prioritize tasks for patients with complex problems. 7. Research - Reads journals that contain studies or articles that may be applicable to practice. Brings ideas and questions to the staff at large for assessment of applicability. Other Information Other information: Education Requirements: ● Graduation from a school of professional nursing. ● If hired after January 6, 2014, must be enrolled within four years of employment, and obtain a Bachelor's degree with a major in Nursing or a Master's degree with a major in Nursing within seven years of employment date. Summary: The Clinical Nurse IV practices at the level of an expert practitioner of nursing as defined by Benner, P. (1984). From Novice to Expert. Addison-Wesley Publishing Company. The nurse at this level demonstrates expertise in caring for patients with multiple and complex problems. In addition to demonstrating clinical leadership on the unit, the Clinical Nurse IV serves as a resource and system-wide consultant to staff and participates in endeavors to increase nursing knowledge. The CN IV functions as a clinical leader. EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT Two-campus (Smithfield and Clayton) Emergency Departments with a combined total of 64 beds , offering diverse patient populations and acuity levels 4:1 nurse-to-patient ratios , supporting safe, high-quality patient care Strong team-based environment with a culture of collaboration and mutual support Chest Pain Accredited facility, delivering evidence-based cardiac care, along with being an interventional STEMI center M-F 7a-5p Primary Stroke Center , providing rapid, coordinated stroke response and treatment Three (3) 12-hour shifts per week , promoting work-life balance and schedule flexibility Responsibilities: 1.
