Responsibilities

Assist with the nursing care of patients preoperatively, intraoperatively, and postoperatively by performing routine and delegated duties according to the standards of the department and hospital practice and policies.
Responsible for the preparation and disbursement of surgical supplies, equipment, and instrumentation – pre, intra-, and postoperatively.
Demonstrates knowledge of principles of asepsis.
Demonstrates knowledge of the standards of AORN guidelines.
Assumes responsibility for clinical competence and professional development.
Participates in the responsible management of all departmental resources.
Takes call as required by the department.
Maintains competencies in the main OR as well as the CVOR.

Qualifications

Job Requirements:

Graduated from an accredited Surgical Tech program or a Certified Surgical Technologist
BLS certification must be obtained within 14 days of hire or transfer into the role and prior to providing direct patient care.

POSITION SUMMARY This position selects and places surgical instruments, supplies and equipment during surgery. The Cardiovascular Operating Room Surgical Technologist is responsible for assisting the physician with advanced tasks during surgical procedures which include cardiopulmonary bypass/heart-lung machine use, cardiac assistive devices, and vascular access and interventions. The CVOR ST must be able to work under high pressure in a fast paced environment. CORE FUNCTIONS 1. Prepares for surgical procedures. Pulls appropriate instruments and supplies and ensures good working order of instruments. Reviews case carts for correct instruments and supplies. Troubleshoots malfunctioning equipment and makes minor adjustments or calls biomedical equipment staff. Checks schedule and plans ahead for upcoming surgical case needs. 2. Anticipates the surgeon's needs. Passes instruments and retracts tissue. Maintains competency to scrub in a minimum of two surgical specialties. 3. Demonstrates the principles of aseptic technique and universal precautions throughout the procedure. Disposes of sharps and trash and places used supplies into case cart for processing. Participates in counting sharps, instruments and sponges. Prepares instruments for cleaning following each case. 4. Ensures that all surgeon preference cards and pick lists are accurate. 5.
