Job Summary and Qualifications

The Cardiac Cath Lab RN reports to the Director Diagnostic Imaging, and works under the direct supervision of the department’s Clinical Coordinator. He/she is responsible for providing direct care to patients undergoing diagnostic, therapeutic, and interventional cardiac and vascular procedures within the Vascular department.  

 

This individual assures the provision of high quality patient care, utilizes equipment appropriately, fosters a cooperative and collaborative relationship with physicians, establishes and maintains good internal and external customer relationships. S/he fosters a team approach to providing patient care that is safe, effective, patient-centered, timely, efficient and equitable. S/he performs all functions according to hospital policies, nursing standards of care, practice guidelines, and applicable regulatory and professional entities within the scope of RN practice. 

 

Patient Population Served : 

 

The Cardiac Cath Lab RN is expected to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care based on the physical ability, intellectual development, psychosocial, education and safety needs of the adult and geriatric patient. 

 

Essential Position Functions : 

 

  1. Performs all job-related duties in a professional manner, maintaining patient dignity, confidentiality and patient safety. Adheres to HIPAA guidelines. 

 

  1. Works in an environment that includes equipment which produces ionizing radiation, a known health hazard. He/she is knowledgeable in the science of radiology, the principles of ALARA, the physical effects of radiation on tissue, and the potential for genetic effects. This knowledge base informs the Cardiac Cath Lab RN’s practice as he/she incorporates safe techniques and protective measures aimed at minimizing the exposure to radiation by the patients and all personnel.  

 

  1. Assists physicians in the performance of all cardiac and vascular procedures. He/she has an  

in-depth knowledge of cardiovascular disease and associated co-morbidities, and is trained and experienced in: 

  1. handling emergent and life-threatening situations 

  • maintains BLS and ACLS certification and skills 

  • maintains IABP certification and skills 

  • proper operation of departmental equipment 

  • achieving and maintaining sterile technique 

  • achieving and maintaining hemostasis following procedures 

  • the uses and risks associated with the administration of contrast media.  

  • Provides direct care to patients – before, during and after procedures. 

  1. Completes pre-procedural physical patient assessment. 
  2. Reviews patient information, including H&P, lab work and other test results. 
  3. Re-assesses and monitors patients based on their individual clinical needs. Initiates appropriate steps to provide optimal patient experience.  
  4. Administers IV fluids and blood products as ordered and per hospital policy.  
  5. Administers medications and evaluates the patient’s response. 
  6. Administers moderate sedation per FMH Anesthesia Procedural Sedation and Analgesia policy. 
  7. Assesses and monitors patients undergoing certain Radiology procedures, including but not limited to: 
  8. Biopsy 
  9. Thoracentesis 
  10. Paracentesis  
  11. Pre- and post- hydration for CT scans 
  12. Completes patient teaching associated with procedures and after-care. 
  13. Communicates patient needs/assessments to physicians 
Documents appropriately in patient’s medical record 
  1. Is knowledgeable in usage of catheters, wires and devices related to departmental procedures. Assists the physician in modifying and adapting procedures according to the specific needs of the patient.  

 

  1. Assists in all of the processes necessary for maintaining an appropriate inventory of supplies in the procedure rooms and for use in the holding rooms. This includes: 

  1. charging for supplies used during a case 

  1. re-ordering supplies to maintain adequate par levels 

  1. restocking and rotating supplies to maintain a first-in-first-out utilization pattern 

  1. assuring the appropriate disposition of expired items 

 

  1. The Cardiac Cath Lab RN is knowledgeable about the normal operation of all equipment in the Cardiovascular Radiology department and is able to recognize problems and changes in routine performance promptly. He/she evaluates the extent and urgency of equipment malfunction incidents, makes recommendations for appropriate action to the Director of Cardiovascular Services and arranges for service as indicated.  

 

  1. Participates in the departments on-call schedule in order to provide off-hours urgent and emergent services as outlined by departmental policy.  

 

  1. Supports the hospital’s Customer Service Commitment and provides service excellence to everyone with whom s/he has contact during the course of performing the duties of this position.  

 

  1. Participates in the hospital’s commitment to Quality Improvement.  

  1. Assists department in QI monitoring and data collection as needed.  

  1. Brings ideas for improvement to the attention of co-workers, supervisors and the department director.  

 

  1. Demonstrates an awareness of, and support for, the hospital’s Mission Statement and Strategic Plan. Assists in the formation and accomplishment of unit goals and objectives.


What qualifications you will need:
  1. Graduate of an accredited school of nursing. 

  1. Current licensure as a Registered Nurse, recognized and accepted by the State of New Hampshire. 

  1. Basic Arrhythmia, BLS and ACLS Certification. 

  1. Two to three years nursing experience in a cardiac monitored setting. 

  1. Excellent communication skills, intermediate computer skills.  

  1. Assumes responsibility without direct supervision. Possesses good problem-solving and organization skills.
