The Registered Nurse-Post Op provides care and education for the patient based on their illness, symptoms, and courses of treatment. This position manages individualized, goal-directed nursing care through use of the nursing process and the principles of primary nursing in accordance with departmental and hospital policies and procedures. This position performs technical skills and provides assistance to surgeons, anesthesia personnel, and other professionals in the facility. This position is responsible for the assessment, care coordination, and implementation of the post-operative care plan of the patient according to prescribed procedures.
- Conducts comprehensive pre operative assessments, including medical history review, medication reconciliation, allergy verification, and identification of perioperative risks.
- Prepares patients for procedures and surgery by initiating IV access, completing pre operative requirements, verifying consents, and coordinating care with surgical and anesthesia teams.
- Provides Phase II post operative recovery nursing care, monitoring patient status, managing pain and other symptoms, implementing prescribed interventions, and assessing readiness for discharge.
- Delivers patient and family education throughout the perioperative continuum, including procedure expectations, anesthesia effects, post operative care, medications, activity restrictions, and discharge instructions; coordinates safe discharge in collaboration with the interdisciplinary team.
- Documents assessments, interventions, patient responses, and education in the electronic health record and collaborates with perioperative team members to promote patient safety, efficient flow, regulatory compliance, and continuity of care.
Minimum Education
- Associates Degree Nursing Required or
- Technical Diploma/Certificate Nursing Required
Minimum Work Experience
- 2 years Registered Nurse experience in acute care, procedural, ambulatory surgery, or perioperative setting Required or
- 0-1 year Pre operative, perioperative, or ambulatory surgery experience Preferred
Licenses and Certifications
- Registered Nurse Licensed State of Florida or eligible compact state Upon Hire Required
- BLS for Healthcare Providers (BLS) American Heart Association Upon Hire Required
- ACLS Provider (ACLS) American Heart Association within 90 Days Required
- National Institutes Of Health Stroke Scale (NIH) within 90 Days Required
Required Skills, Knowledge and Abilities
- Knowledge of perioperative nursing principles covering pre operative preparation and Phase II recovery.
- Knowledge of anesthesia considerations, discharge criteria, and patient safety standards.
- Skill in comprehensive patient assessment and recognition of abnormal findings.
- Skill in IV insertion, medication administration, and post operative monitoring.
- Ability to effectively educate patients and families across the perioperative continuum.
- Ability to manage multiple patients in a fast paced pre/post procedural environment.
- Ability to prioritize care and exercise sound clinical judgment.
- Ability to communicate clearly and collaborate with providers and interdisciplinary teams.
- Ability to document accurately using electronic health record systems.
- Ability to maintain professionalism, accountability, and patient centered care.
