Position Summary:

The Psychiatric Nurse Manager is a registered nurse, who has clinical and administrative responsibility for the overall quality of nursing care provided on specific units; plans, coordinates, directs and controls the work of all nursing department employees.  Is responsible for daily operations, and performs the majority of their duties in the work area in conjunction with staff.

 

Responsibilities

Supervisory and Administrative Responsibilities 

  • Accountable for effective delivery of patient care on the unit through clinical supervision, evaluation of staff, training, direct observation, patient and family feedback, consultation with physicians, role modeling, and providing other resources to staff as needed. 
  • Responsible for hiring, training, orientating and evaluating performance/competency, and discipline of unit employees. Collaborates with the Director of Patient Care Services for position management, staffing and scheduling.
  • Facilitates physician/patient communications, interactions, and follow-up. 
  • Participates in the development, implementation, and monitoring of annual operating budget. 
  • Is responsible for all quality measures for units. Investigates all variances. Monitors Balance Scorecard measures (Customer Satisfaction, Seclusion/Restraint, and Turnover) and strives to exceed goals. Responsible for action plans related to Root Cause Analysis/sentinel events/state reportable/incident reviews. 
  • Provides recovery/conflict resolution for customer or patient activities, providing crisis management response when necessary. Monitors patient complaints. 
  • Ensures compliance with regulatory agency requirements (The Joint Commission, state agencies, etc.), as related to patient care and clinical documentation activities. 
  • Reports to the Peninsula Director of Patient Care Services for matters related to hospital specific administration and nursing issues. 
  • Is a member of the Peninsula Nursing Leadership Team and as such participates in policy development, strategic planning and coordination of care for the nursing department.
  • Functions as Nursing Supervisor on a PRN basis.
  • Serves as liaison for nursing student rotations. 
  • Attends meetings as required and participates on committees as directed. 
  • Responsible for coordinating and completion of monthly schedules for Nurses, Program Counselors and Team Leader Program Counselors.
  • Responsible for maintaining budget and productivity targets to ensure adequate coverage for patient care. 
  • Performs other related services as assigned or requested.

Unit Responsibilities 

  • Responsible for maintaining a safe and therapeutic patient environment as part of the patient care teams and maintains on-going communication with all nursing staff regarding individual patient needs and/or concerns. 
  • Understands the policies and procedures for emergencies and is responsible for coordination of response. 

Clinical Responsibilities

  • Accountable for the implementation and evaluation of standards of care and standards of practice. Serves as a clinical resource.
  • Responsible for patient care team development and primary nursing processes.
  • Determines optimal team composition and facilitates assignments based upon patient needs. 
  • Serve as liaison with managers, clinical services, and other departments responsible for coordinated patient care along the continuum of care.
  • Demonstrates knowledge and competency in providing for the age-specific needs of the patients served on the unit. 

Training and Development Responsibilities

  • Attends on a regular basis staff training and development sessions in order to enhance job knowledge. 
  • Maintains all necessary certifications – CPR, TCI, etc.  
  • Identifies learning needs of team members and works towards meeting those needs. 
  • Plans and implements a program for continuing self development through maintaining membership in specialty nursing association, continuing education, and professional presentations.

Qualifications

Minimum Education:           

A graduate from an accredited school of nursing. Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing preferred.

 

Minimum Experience:         

Previous experience in the practice of psychiatric nursing is preferred as is the ability to work within a multidisciplinary team in a leadership capacity.  Experience in a supervisory role is required.

 

Licensure Requirement:      

Current licensure as a registered professional nurse in the State of Tennessee. Current CPR certification required.

Must demonstrate the ability to work effectively with others in a positive team oriented manner. Must have excellent assessment skills and the capacity for good judgment.
