Oncology Nurse Residency Program - New Graduate Nurse INPATIENT NURSE (36 hrs/week)

The nurse resident’s responsibilities during this position will focus on the successful transition into clinical nursing practices, including assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of nursing care for a complex patient population. Upon successful completion of this program, residents may apply for a posted permanent employment position. During the residency, multiple nurse colleagues (preceptors, mentors) and nurse directors will provide feedback regarding the resident’s transition and competency development. The ultimate supervisory responsibility will be the Program Director.

The nurse resident provides patient and family education and psychosocial and emotional support. The resident is a member of a multidisciplinary care team that requires effective communication and collaboration with co-workers and staff at the Institute, and other collaborating institutions and agencies in the ambulatory and inpatient settings. The nurse resident identifies their own professional goals and learning needs. The role requires clinical expertise, critical thinking, collaborative practice, excellent communication skills and an understanding of the principles and practices of clinical research.   • This position requires you have completed a Bachelor's of Science or higher in nursing program and have been awarded your diploma prior to your start date.
  • This position requires you have passed the NCLEX exam and have a Massachusetts State Nursing License prior to your start date.
  • Must meet the DFCI criteria of Newly Licensed Nurse meaning: A licensed RN who has not previously practiced in an RN role.

Demonstrated ability to work as an effective member of an interdisciplinary team.

Demonstrated skills in critical thinking, problem solving, and ability to make independent decisions.

Strong Computer Skills Preferred.

Principal Duties And Responsibilities

  • Clinical nursing: delivers expert, evidence-based care to patients and families.
  • Implements nursing process:
  • Assesses patient and family needs.
  • Analyzes assessment data to develop and support clinically accurate diagnoses.
  • Plans care by establishing goals with measurable outcomes.
  • Implements the plan of care.

  • Educates patient and family regarding various aspects and treatment modalities of disease, which may include chemotherapy, immunotherapy, radiation therapy, and research protocols.
  • Recognizes and responds to emergency situations appropriately.
  • Maintains BLS certification.
  • Identifies appropriate community resources to promote continuity of care and makes appropriate referrals.
  • Complies with accepted standards of professional nursing practice, as well as with all licensure/registration requirements applicable to the nursing role.

Responsible for the planning, delivery and management of direct patient care utilizing the nursing process and adhering to the standards of nursing practice. I. Major Responsibilities: 1. Utilizes the Nursing Process for the delivery and management of patient’s care from Admission to Discharge, appropriate to the developmental age of the patient population. 2. Performs patient assessment/reassessment according to standard procedure. 3. Develops and coordinates individual plan of care including discharge planning. 4. Directs, supervises, coordinates and evaluate nursing care within assigned clinical setting. 5. Delegates appropriately to others in accordance with job description and competency level. II. Position Qualifications: License/Certification/Education: Required: 1. Current Massachusetts Nursing licensure and registration. 2. BLS through either American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross (ARC) is a requirement for every RN within 30 days of hire. 3. ACLS through American Heart Association (AHA) required in select areas (Gannett, MP1, ICU, ED, Cath Lab, Endo, IR, PACU, Float Pool) within 6 months or first scheduled course offering whichever is sooner. 4. PALS through American Heart Association (AHA) required in select areas (PACU, ED) within 6 months or first scheduled course offering whichever is sooner. 5. NRP Advanced Provider through American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) required in select areas (Maternity) within 6 months or first scheduled course offering whichever is sooner. Preferred: 1. Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing highly preferred. Experience/Skills: Required: 1. Thorough knowledge of the discipline of Nursing. Unless certification, licensure or registration is required, an equivalent combination of education and experience which provides proficiency in the areas of responsibility listed in this description may be substituted for the above requirements. Department-specific competencies and their measurements will be developed and maintained in the individual departments. The competencies will be maintained and attached to the departmental job description. Responsible managers will review competencies with position incumbents. ER RN experience is preferred.
