Position Summary:

The Inpatient Urology Hospitalist - Advanced Practice Provider (APP) serves as an integral member of the inpatient urology team, providing comprehensive care to hospitalized urologic patients across the continuum of care. This experienced provider functions with a high degree of clinical autonomy, collaborates closely with attending urologists, supports operative and procedural services, assists with clinical education, and provides schedule flexibility to support service coverage needs.

The ideal candidate possesses inpatient urology experience, demonstrates excellent clinical judgment, is comfortable managing complex surgical patients independently, and is capable of assisting surgeons in the operating room when needed.

Inpatient Clinical Management

Independently evaluate and manage hospitalized urology patients including:

• Nephrolithiasis

• Obstructive uropathy

• Removal of ureteral stents when applicable

• Other urologic bedside procedures as credentialed

Responsibilities include:

• Daily rounds

• Admission history and physicals

• Consultations

• Progress notes

• Discharge planning and summaries

• Care coordination with consulting services

• Patient and family education

• Participation in multidisciplinary rounds

● Completion of an accredited graduate-level Advanced Practice Provider (APRN or PA) program.
Licensure/Certification Requirements:
● Licensed as an Advanced Practice Provider (i.e., Nurse Practitioner, Physician Assistant, Clinical Pharmacist Practitioner, Certified Nurse Midwife, Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist) in the state of North Carolina.
● Board certification if required by the Department. DEA.
Professional Experience Requirements:

● Minimum 3 years of surgical APP experience preferred

● Prior first-assist experience in robotic, laparoscopic, and open surgery preferred

● No prior experience required.

PA: Graduate of ARC accredited Physician Assistant Program, Master’s Degree or Doctoral Degree preferred. Certification NP: PNP-AC or PNP-AC/PC. FNPs and PNP-PCs are not being considered for this position. PA: PA-C Licensure NP: Current unrestricted RN license issued by or recognized by the NCBON with authorization to practice as an NP. PA: Current medical license issued by the NCMB with authorization to practice as a Physician Assistant. Both: State and Federal DEA unrestricted prescriptive authority Experience Nurse Practitioner/Physician Assistant experience in a pediatric acute care clinical setting strongly preferred. 2+ years of ICU nursing experience is also preferred. Life support BLS PALS Recommended: ACLS Physical and mental requirements: Able to clearly articulate scope of practice, and practices within those guidelines as a Nurse Practitioner / Physician Assistant in the state of North Carolina and within the Duke University Health System. Able to independently seek out resources and work collaboratively to solve complex problems Able to communicate clearly with patients, families, visitors, healthcare team, physicians, administrators, leadership, and others. Able to use sensory and cognitive functions to process and prioritize information, perform health assessments, treatment, and follow-up. Able to use fine motor skills Able to record activities, document assessments & interventions; prepare reports and presentations; Able to use computer and learn new software programs Able to provide leadership in clinical area of expertise and in meeting organizational goals Able to navigate the Hospital and DUHS to provide clinical expertise to specific patient populations Able to withstand prolonged standing and walking with the ability to move or lift at least fifty pounds Able to remain focused and organized Able to work collaboratively with all levels of personnel Job Hours Rotating 12 hours shifts to provide 24hour/day 7 day a week coverage. Schedule may be modified by the clinical or leadership team when needed.
