The Surgical Technologist handles the instruments, supplies, and equipment necessary during the surgical procedure. Performs appropriate counts with circulator prior to the operation and before incision is closed. Gowns and gloves surgeon and assistants. Helps in draping sterile field. Passes instruments, etc., to surgeon during procedure. Maintains highest standard of sterile technique during procedure. Prepares sterile dressings. Cleans and prepares instruments for terminal sterilization. Assists other members of team with terminal cleaning of room. Assists in prepping room for the next patient. Obtains appropriate sterile and unsterile items needed for procedure. Opens sterile supplies. Properly cares for specimens. Secures dressings after incision closure. Maintains compliance in RQI. The Surgical Tech Extern will assist Surgical department with carrying out patient care activities within the scope of training and experience. Job Functions: Under the observation of the surgical tech, OR Nurse or Surgeon performs a variety of preparatory, scrubbing and related services necessary to provide patient service in the operating room and assists with surgical cases in all specialty areas. Provides a clean, safe, and efficient area conducive to optimal patient care. Utilizes aseptic surgical techniques in the preparation of materials, supplies and equipment for surgical procedures (this includes but not limited to assistance with gowning and gloving; preparation and draping of the surgical area; provision of a sterile field, instruments, suture and related materials; anticipation of the Surgeons' needs; passing of instruments and/or supplies; holding of retractors, observing and reporting possible breaks in aseptic technique; and assisting in maintaining a sterile, dry, unobstructed field). Acts as a scrub assistant for surgical procedures and maintains basic knowledge of a variety of procedures. Ensures the environmental disinfection, safety, and efficiency of the operating room. This includes but not limited to setting up the room for each case including moving equipment (i.e., tables, cameras, microscopes, fracture table, and instrument pans), operating the various types of equipment used during operating room procedures, and returning equipment post procedure. Notifies appropriate staff of equipment and supply problems. Transports patients and/or equipment and supplies. Performs various patient positioning and transporting duties, which require lifting and pushing/pulling, while utilizing proper technique. Maintains checking of the working condition of equipment, sterility, and sending damaged items out for repair. Assumes all other duties and responsibilities as necessary. Minimum Education/Experience Required: High School Diploma/GED required. Currently enrolled in an accredited or approved program in Surgical Technology and must have completed the first half of the Surgical Technology program required. Recommendation by the instructor preferred. BLS required upon hire – will obtain during orientation if needed. Special Knowledge, Skills, Training: Knowledge of aseptic surgical techniques used in the preparation of materials, supplies, and equipment for various surgical procedures.
