Surgical Technologists, sometimes called “scrub techs”, assist in surgical procedures under the supervision of surgeons and registered nurses and ensure quality patient care during the operative procedure and maintaining a sterile field. Surgical Technologists perform a variety of functions, such as checking supplies and equipment, setting up sterile tables, performing appropriate counts, draping the sterile field, passing instruments to the surgeon and assistant during the procedure, prepare sterile dressing and clean instruments for terminal sterilization. A caregiver in this position works days and on-call from 7:00 a.m. -- 3:30 p.m. or 10:00 a.m. -- 8:30 p.m. Orientation will take place for three to six months from 7:00 a.m. -- 3:30 p.m. A caregiver who excels in this role will: Set up the sterile table and ensure appropriate supplies, drugs and equipment are available. Assist RN in counting all sponges, instruments, etc. at appropriate times during surgery. Assist in gowning and gloving surgical team members and draping patients. Ensure aseptic condition is maintained by the scrubbed surgical team through the procedure. Participate in the intraoperative “timeout.” Collect, identify and label specimens removed during surgical procedures and gives specimens to circulator for disposition. Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include: Completion of a surgical technology program accredited through the CAAHEP or ABHES OR completion of a military surgical technology program OR certification as a Surgical Technologist (acceptable certifications for this route are TS-C (through the National Center for Competency Training) or CST (through the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting) Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification through the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross Physical Requirements: Requires full range of body motion including handling and lifting patients, manual and finger dexterity and eye-hand coordination. Acts as a patient advocate Participates in preoperative assessment and planning for selected surgical patients in collaboration with peri-operative team members. Adheres to the Universal Protocol Policy by completing and participates in surgical time outs. Assists the Surgeon during the operative procedure: Visualization of the operative site: Provides the surgeon exposure through appropriate placement and securing of instruments and retractors Packing with sponges Digital manipulation of tissue Suctioning, irrigating, or sponging Manipulation of suture materials (i.e. loops, tags, running sutures) Proper use of body mechanics to prevent obstructing the surgeon’s view Utilize appropriate techniques to assist with hemostasis: Clamping or cauterizing vessels or tissue Tying/ligating clamped vessels or tissue Applying hemostatic clips Placing local hemostatic agents Applying vessel loops Applying non-crushing clamps Applying direct digital pressure Utilize appropriate techniques to assist with closure of body planes: Utilizing running or interrupted sutures with absorbable or non-absorbable material of wound layers, including muscle and fascia Utilizing subcuticular closure technique with or without adhesive skin-closure strips Closing skin with method per surgeon’s directive (suture, staples) Post operative subcutaneous injection of local anesthetic per surgeon’s directive Assist with securing drainage system to tissue Selecting and applying wound dressings: Liquid or spray occlusive materials Absorbent material affixed with tape or circumferential wrapping Immobilizing dressing (soft or rigid) Adheres to infection control standards of practice to protect the patient from surgical site infection. Protects the patient from injury caused by improper positioning, chemical, electrical, laser, mechanical, thermal sources, and extraneous objects.
