Maryland Board of Nursing License Renewal: 3 Steps

Do you hold a nursing license issued in Maryland? Follow the three steps below to renew it. If your license was issued in another compact state or outside Maryland, you may need to renew it in your license’s home state.Not eligible to renew? You still have options:

Step 1: Determine Your Renewal Deadline

APRNs, RNs, and LPNs

To start your MBON license renewal process, you'll need to find out when your license expires. In Maryland, you’ll need to renew your licenses every two years, and they expire on the 28th day of your birth month. You have a 90-day window before the due date and a 30-day grace period after the expiration date to submit your renewal.Keep in mind that Maryland uses a birth‑year renewal cycle:

If you were born in an odd‑numbered year, you renew in odd‑numbered years.
If you were born in an even‑numbered year, you renew in even‑numbered years.

CNAs

You’ll also need to follow a two-year renewal schedule, with your license expiring on the 28th day of your birth month. You can always check this information in real time using Maryland’s online nursing license verification portal. Simply go to the “Profession” tab and select “Nursing” from the dropdown menu. Then choose your license type and enter your name and license number. Once submitted, the portal will show your next renewal date.

Step 2: Satisfy Continuing Education Requirements

RNs and LPNs

To renew your license, you must show proof of one of the following:

Worked for at least 1,000 hours as a nurse in the 5 years before your renewal application.
Completed all the requirements for a diploma or degree from an accredited nursing program in the 5 years before your renewal application.
Finished 30 continuing education units in the 2 years before your renewal application date.

Can’t meet the requirements? In this case, you’ll need to complete a board-approved refresher program or preceptorship program before you can renew your license.

APRNs

In Maryland, APRNs — including nurse practitioners (NPs), clinical nurse specialists (CNSs), certified nurse midwives (CNMs), and certified registered nurse anesthetists (CRNAs) — are required to keep their national APRN certification current in order to renew their APRN authority. This means completing any continuing education required by your national certifying body (such as ANCC or AANP).

CNAs

To submit your application, visit the Maryland nursing license renewal system and fill in the required form to verify your information, including your last name, license number, and Social Security number.
