Medical Assistant I - Eureka, CA - Bilingual (Spanish)

Planned Parenthood Northern California (PPNorCal) is seeking a Reproductive Health Specialist (Medical Assistant) for our Eureka Health Center. This role is full-time, 40 hours per week. SUMMARY A Reproductive Health Specialist (RHS) is a member of the health care team, assisting with the provision of family planning health care, prenatal (if offered) and abortion services, and research activities (as assigned). An RHS provides health information to patients, supports licensed providers in providing clinical services, and performs health center-based duties required for patient care. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include being trained in back-office responsibilities listed below. Other duties may be assigned. Provide health information and instructions to patients and assist other staff in a patient-centered manner. Process and document lab work. Assist in the recovery room if surgical services are provided. Perform medical assistant-related tasks including taking vital signs, venipuncture, injections, and document in the electronic medical record. Work as a team member to set-up and clean-up exam rooms and lab, handle lab specimens, stock supplies, and maintain lab equipment. Support patient care activities of licensed providers, including RN, Clinician, and/or Physician as directed. Provide information and patient education about PPNorCal’s services, including pregnancy options, in a caring, non-judgmental, factual manner. Assist in all aspects of abortion procedure, including performing vital signs, lab work, and tissue processing as needed; assist abortion provider during procedure while being supportive of patient; and assist in recovery room. Participate in affiliate research studies conducted in the health center in accordance with study protocols, standard operating procedures, and departmental goals. Work with Community Health Workers (CHWs) to identify and assist patients who need community and referrals. Schedule appointments, provide information about medical services and appropriate referrals, and provide health information as appropriate. Maintain complete patient confidentiality at all times. Function as a member of a health care team, demonstrating a positive attitude and willingness to assist team members at all times. Handle communication problems with other staff and managers directly, constructively, and with sensitivity. Ensure accurate completion and patient understanding of all necessary forms. Abstract or scan medical records into the electronic health record as needed. Adhere to affiliate goals and policies on professionalism, wait time in-health center, and the system for addressing patient complaints. Maintain professional image through appropriate dress and manner. Treat other staff and patients with courtesy and respect at all times, under all circumstances. Participate in health center efforts to achieve established goals for productivity. Remain flexible and available to extend/change scheduled hours as needed to meet needs of the health center and our patients. Follow affiliate-wide protocols, policies, and procedures, and any center-specific policies and procedures. Understand and demonstrate, in all interactions, the importance of high-quality care, including accurate charting, filing, and follow-up. Utilize the principles of trauma-informed care and communication throughout all interactions with other staff and patients at all times. Participate in maintaining general upkeep of the facility; keep lobbies, reception area, and other rooms tidy. Float RHS staff are required to travel to multiple regional based health centers as requested. May be short notice and travel will be greater than 50% of time. LANGUAGE SKILLS Ability to read and interpret documents such as medical protocols, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to document in medical chart concisely, accurately, and according to PPNorCal protocols. MATHEMATICAL SKILLS Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs. Ability to manage cash, make change, and balance the daily posts. REASONING ABILITY Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations. COMPUTER SKILLS To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of basic keyboarding, internet access and email systems. CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS Medical Assistant certificate desired but not required. Pay Range: The wage scale reflects the compensation that a new employee can expect to receive if offered employment. SUMMARY The Registered Nurse will function as part of health center department staff providing direct patient-centered care in surgical abortion clinic under the clinical supervision of the Nurse Manager and in accordance with PPFA and PPNorCal Medical Standards and Guidelines and all relevant federal, state, and local regulations. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES OF PPNorCal RN include the following: Adhere to PPNorCal Medical Standards and Guidelines while providing patient-centered care. Work as an integral member of the outpatient clinical team utilizing detailed communication to ensure clinic and department flow is optimal. Maintain excellent organizational skills, a sense of responsibility and a high level of motivation. Work efficiently in a busy environment, often under pressure, without compromising accuracy, attention to detail, and courtesy to patients and staff. Document in electronic health records accurately and thoroughly. Maintain professional manner and patient confidentiality. Dispense self-administered hormonal contraceptives and administer injections of hormonal contraceptives approved by the Federal Food & Drug Administration (FDA) in strict adherence to PPNorCal RN standardized procedures, PPNorCal MS&Gs, and US Medical Eligibility Criteria. Refill medications per order of an Advanced Practice Clinician or physician. Educate patients on sexually transmitted illnesses and reproductive/urinary tract infections signs, symptoms, etiology and treatment. Educate patients on the female reproductive cycle and all contraceptive method options. Consult with Advanced Practice Clinicians and the on-call physician appropriately. Manage medical emergencies. Support and actively participate in the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion initiatives of PPNorCal. ESSENCIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES OF RN IN PROCEDURAL ABORTION CLINIC Perform transvaginal and abdominal ultrasounds if appropriately trained and privileged Review medical history, drug allergies, current medications, and labs of patients to address any special considerations and ensure no contraindications to surgical abortion procedure. Consult with abortion providers regarding special considerations or contraindications to surgical abortion procedure as needed. Complete patient intake for procedural abortion and family planning services as needed. Perform transvaginal and/or abdominal ultrasounds Perform in-house labs such as hemoglobin, RH factor, rapid HIV tests and pregnancy tests. Collect blood, urine, pharyngeal and rectal samples for testing and order labs as instructed by an Advanced Practice Clinician or physician. Complete sedation screening on all patients who elect moderate sedation; screening includes but is not limited to review of vital signs, BMI, oxygen saturation, ASA classification, risk of obstructive sleep apnea, physical exam of head and neck, and auscultation of heart and lungs. Initiate peripheral intravenous lines and withdraw blood as needed. Elicit and answer questions regarding the surgical abortion procedure, risks, and aftercare. Elicit and answer questions regarding return of menstruation and birth control use/side effects. Inform patients of next steps and expectations in their surgical abortion appointment. Review and sign informed consent forms for surgical abortion with patients before administering cervical preparation medication. Assist the abortion provider throughout the surgical abortion including room set-up, rooming of patient, monitoring of patient vital signs, comforting the patient, and responding to emergencies. Receive patients in the recovery room and assist in transferring patient from the procedure room to the recovery room as needed. Create a warm, comforting environment in the recovery room. Supervise patients in the recovery room including but not limited to taking vital signs, assessing pain level, evaluating bleeding, educating, and using clinical judgement to escalate concerns to the abortion provider. Provide education to patients regarding all medications to be administered, including their desired effects, side effects and risks. SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES When working with an LVN in the recovery room during surgical abortion clinic, the RN is responsible for supervising all aspects of LVN work. Current ACLS and BLS certificate. Reliable automobile transportation and a valid CA Driver's License and insurance preferred. Passion for working with low-income and culturally-diverse clients with an emphasis on prevention of illness and empowerment. Bilingual English/Spanish preferred.
