Scope Of Position The Registered Nurse in the Surgical Services Section utilizes the nursing process, diagnoses to treat human responses to actual or potential problems and is accountable to the patient, family, and peers for the totality of work performed in order that the organization can fulfill its primary mission of providing quality health care within the community. Population serviced includes adult, geriatric patients and upon occasion, adolescents. Reports to the OR Manager. Responsibilities Assess, plan, and implement a individualized plan of care in the preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative phases. Prepare operating rooms, surgical instruments and equipment according to procedure requirements. Maintain awareness while in the surgery suite of the patient, surgeon, anesthesia responses, and overall condition during surgery. Maintain strict adherence to infection control and safety protocols. Maintain timely and accurate documentation of nursing care provided to ensure seamless surgical care, collaborating with surgeons. anesthesia and other healthcare professionals. Contributes to Quality Improvement activities and participates in the departmental Quality Improvement Program. Clear communication with the patient and their families. Be familiar and adhere to the regulations of AORN. Perform other related duties as required. Requirements Licensed Registered Nurse in the State of Connecticut Minimum of 1-2 years of nursing experience in the operating room, successful completion of the periop 101 course, or ability to successfully complete periop 101 course required. Certification in Perioperative Nursing (CNOR), preferred. Strong critical thinking, communication, and teamwork skills. Ability to work in a time-oriented environment including exposure to all patient elements, i.e. blood borne pathogens, etc. Physical requirements: Able to push, pull and lift up to 50 lbs using provided equipment or additional manpower as needed. Standing and walking for extended periods of time wearing a lead apron. Must have basic computer skills and ability to access internet and other programs applicable to Waterbury Hospital procedures. Periop 101 Operating Room RN

Overview The Periop 101 Registered Nurse in the Operating Room has existing experience as a Registered Nurse but is new to the perioperative patient care environment. In some cases, a new graduate RN may be considered with relevant clinical exposure to the perioperative setting. This position requires attention to detail, a willingness to be taught in a new and fast-paced environment, ability to take constructive feedback, and the ability to critically think quickly and solve problems. The Periop 101 RN will participate in a structured, hybrid, instructor led Association of periOperative Registered Nurses Periop 101: A Core Curriculum course over a number of weeks. Education received is an investment and will take 9-12 months of training. It includes required reading and keeping notes in preparation for an exam to pass the course. The Periop 101 RN will commit to completing the program, transitioning into a standard OR RN position which includes call, and staying in their position for a minimum of two years following completion of the program. SCOPE OF POSITION The Registered Nurse in the Surgical Services Section exemplifies the qualities of leadership, delegation, collaboration, effective communication, and advocacy. Assists in the delivery of cardiac health care and patient care management in the adult population by performing selected clinical and administrative duties. This role would service the hospital-based outpatient cardiac surgery and structural heart clinics. Duties And Responsibilities Assists providers in preparing for office visits. Prepares patients for examination and treatment. Takes patient histories and vital signs and performs medication review. Performs phlebotomy and EKG as needed. Prepares exam and treatment rooms with necessary supplies. Assists with ordering and maintaining supplies and equipment. Assists with scheduling of tests and treatments and follows through with referrals when indicated. Screen telephone calls for a referral to a nurse or provider. Maintains patient files and records and other information according to established office standards. Implements orders under provider direction and notifies patients of results as requested.
