You don’t mind getting a little dirty … this could include (but is not limited to) assisting the patient with activities of daily living such as providing assistance with personal hygiene (toileting, bathing, care of mouth, skin and hair), ambulation, eating, dressing, shaving, light housekeeping, and other household chores.

You don’t have to be a gourmet chef but you can prepare a good meal and work your way around a kitchen.

You are able to perform other assigned activities which are taught by a nurse, for a specific patient, which includes but is not limited to:

Assisting with the change of ostomy appliances
Reinforcement of dressings (non-sterile)
Assisting with the use of devices for aid in daily living (cane, walker, wheelchair or lift device)
Assisting with prescribed range of motion exercises
Assisting with self-administered simple urine tests for sugar acetone or albumin (may not interpret results)
Measuring and preparing special diets
Measuring intake and output
Taking vital signs (temperature, pulse, respirations and blood pressure)
Application of an external (condom-type) catheter
Assisting with application of arm sling, arm splint or leg splint

Must Haves:

High school degree and/or a G.E.D. certificate
Six months experience as a Home Health Aide (HHA) and/or Personal Care Assistant (PCA) in health care (in homes or facilities) and successful completion of a State approved Nurse Aide or Home Health Aide (HHA) and/or Personal Care Assistant (PCA) course
The Home Health Aide shall have successfully completed a Competency Evaluation that meets the State licensing law for home health agencies
Must have a sympathetic attitude toward the care of the sick, and ability to deal effectively with the demands of the job
Current CPR Certificate is recommended
Meets the requirements for employees providing direct patient care
Read, write, speak and understand English as needed for the job
Have a valid driver’s license and use of an insured automobile for work or access to adequate transportation

JOB DESCRIPTION SUMMARY The hospice aide works under the supervision of a registered nurse and performs various tasks as assigned in accordance with the patient’s plan of care to meet the patient's personal needs and to promote comfort. The hospice aide is responsible for reporting and documenting observations and care performed. The hospice aide will be assigned in a manner that promotes quality, continuity and safety of a patient's care. ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS/RESPONSIBILITIES Responsibilities of the hospice aide include, but are not limited to, the following: 1. Performing personal care needs after given a patient's assignment and attending to his/her requests promptly. If unable to perform a certain task, report to the Case Manager immediately. 2. Providing patient and family with positive communication techniques, within realm of ethical and respectful care, including confidentiality. 3. Meeting safety needs of patient and using equipment safely and properly (foot stools, side rails, O2 etc.) 4. Giving personal care including baths, back rubs, oral hygiene, shampoos and changing bed linen as often as assigned. 5. Assisting in dressing and undressing patients as assigned. 6. Provides personal care and related homemaking duties for the adult client with short-term rehabilitation, and care of the sick during terminal stage of life. The Home Health Aide is responsible for communication of the implementation of the plan of care and reports changes in the clients’ status. The client’s home setting may be a private residence, assisted living or skilled nursing facility. The Home Health Aide consistently follows the McLean mission and code of conduct. JOB COMPETENCIES: 1.
