Job Summary and Qualifications

Performs direct patient care under the direct supervision of a licensed nurse. Maintains a safe patient care environment. Fulfills departmental responsibilities that foster the goals of the hospital’s mission and vision statements.When functioning as a Tech First Assistant (Tech III), I demonstrated knowledge of surgical assisting and closure. 

What you will do in this role:

  • Demonstrates knowledge of applying surgical gloves using aseptic technique and maintaining a sterile field.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of preparing for surgery by “pulling” the appropriate supplies and instruments for the procedure.
  • Understands and recognizes the different surgical instruments and their applications.
  • Displays appropriate knowledge of Anatomy and Physiology in order to prepare and assist in surgical/endo procedures.
  • Maintains a safe sterile field by: a – positioning sharps correctly b – labeling all medications on sterile field c – understanding of electrocautery and other devices that generate heat to prevent possible fires in the O.R. d – Participating in a “timeout” with rest of the surgical team to maintain patient safety.
  • Demonstrates ability to appropriately set up for a surgical/ endo procedure and follow protocol in the counting of supplies/instrument to ensure no foreign object is left inside of the patient.
  • Understands the principles of and is able to competently assist a physician during a procedure and possesses adequate knowledge of the procedure itself.
  • Displays the ability to differentiate sutures and their applications.
  • Demonstrates the ability to follow through until problems are addressed or corrected.
  • Alert to the detection of errors in own work and the work of others with appropriate corrective actions initiated.
  • Demonstrates a teamwork approach in the care of a patient during the perioperative phase.
  • Participates in department’s process improvement activities.

What Qualifications You Will Need:

* Graduate of a Surgical Technology program or military equivalent training in the Surgical Technologist role is required.

* Certification in Surgical Technology

* Current BCLS certification from the American Heart Association required.

* 1 year of Surgical Technologist experience is preferred

Applies knowledge of surgical procedure by anticipating the surgeon's needs, having supplies opened or available in a cost-effective manner as observed by the circulating nurse/nurse manager. Seeks the circulating nurse's assistance and references the preference card when unable to decide about opening versus readily available. Attends and participates in in-services and other continuing education opportunities to maintain professional development. Maintains correct count of sponges, needles, and instruments according to the established policy and procedure 100% of the time as observed by the circulating nurse. Assists in the care and labeling of specimens 100% of the time as observed by the circulating nurse. Acknowledges the importance of patient safety by participating in the proper handling of medications within the sterile field. Prepares O.R. equipment and supplies while performing patient care-related duties in an age-appropriate manner. Demonstrates effective time management skills. Cares for one or more of the following age groups routinely: Neonates, Infants, Toddler, Preschool Age, School Age, Adolescent, and Adult. Skills & Requirements Required Educational program completion for surgical technologists which may include operating room/surgical training completed in the army, navy, air force, marine corps, or coast guard of the United States or in the United States Public Health Service Required CST-SUR - Cert-Cert Surgical TECH by the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting and TSC-NCCT - Cert-TECH Surgery - Certified NCCT by the National Center for Competency Testing Required 2 years' experience as a surgical technologist and experience in two or more surgical specialties
