What you will do in this role:
- Demonstrates knowledge of applying surgical gloves using aseptic technique and maintaining a sterile field.
- Demonstrates knowledge of preparing for surgery by “pulling” the appropriate supplies and instruments for the procedure.
- Understands and recognizes the different surgical instruments and their applications.
- Displays appropriate knowledge of Anatomy and Physiology to prepare and assist in surgical procedures.
- Maintains a safe sterile field by a – positioning sharps correctly b – labeling all medications on sterile field c – understanding of electrocautery and other devices that generate heat to prevent possible fires in the O.R. d – Participating in a “timeout” with rest of the surgical team to maintain patient safety.
- Demonstrates ability to appropriately set up for a surgical procedure and follow protocol in the counting of supplies/instruments to ensure no foreign object is left inside of the patient.
- Understands the principles of and can competently assist a surgeon during a procedure and possesses adequate knowledge of the procedure itself.
- Displays the ability to differentiate sutures and their applications.
- Demonstrates the ability to close a surgical site (under physician supervision) with appropriate suture.
- Demonstrates a teamwork approach in the care of a patient during the perioperative phase.
What qualifications you will need:
- Graduate of a Surgical Technology program or military equivalent training in the Surgical Technologist role is required.
- Certification in Surgical Technology or verifiable Surgical Tech experience prior to 9/1/2009 is required.
- Current BCLS certification from the American Heart Association required.
- 1 year of Surgical Technologist experience is preferred.
