Job Summary and Qualifications
“I was taking care of a patient in critical condition who was on ECMO and hadn’t been eating in over two months. Finally, we were able to downsize his trach and I helped him make a surprise FaceTime call to his wife, who he hadnt been able to speak to in 84 days. It was such a sweet and special moment.”
Sarah, ICU RN at HCA Healthcare
As a Resident II Critical Care Registered Nurse, youll deliver precise, detail-focused care to patients facing serious and potentially life-threatening illnesses and injuries. You’ll develop expertise in managing potent IV drips, analyzing complex labs, and operating advanced life-sustaining equipment such as ventilators, ECMO and CRRT machines. You will work with greater autonomy from standing physician orders and protocols. You’ll also support patients and families - helping them understand prognoses, cope with fear and grief, and engage in end-of-life conversations when applicable. You will always be learning – from evidence-based practices surrounding ICU protocols and procedures to medical technology – as critical care is always advancing. If you are a strong critical thinker, an adept learner, a deeply compassionate caregiver, and are able to remain calm under pressure, the ICU may be the right fit for you.
- Patient Care Delivery: As a Resident II Registered Nurse on Progressive Care (PCU), you’ll deliver high-quality, patient-centered care through patient assessment, procedures, medication administration, and close monitoring of patients’ therapeutic responses. You will apply established nursing models such as “Assess, Perform, Teach and Manage” to guide your practice.
- Documentation: You will promptly document patient conditions, care provided, and patient responses in their medical record. You will report any changes in status or treatment responses to the provider and intervene as needed.
- Interdisciplinary Team Collaboration: You will serve as a vital member of a diverse multidisciplinary team—including medical providers, allied health professionals, and nursing support—working collaboratively to deliver holistic, patient-centered care.
- Patient Education: You will educate patients on their medical condition, treatment plans, medications, possible side effects, follow-up measures, and more.
- Clinical Excellence: You will engage in evidence-based best practices and continuous process improvement initiatives that enhance the patient experience and patient outcomes, including SAFETY rounding, communication fundamentals/AIDET, Teach-Back, Narrating Care, etc.
