The Salem Health Cardio-Thoracic Surgery Clinic offers a meaningful opportunity to support patients through some of the most critical moments in their care journey. As a medical assistant in this clinic, you will work with a team of skilled professionals and play a vital role in monitoring patient status, gathering key clinical information, coordinating provider orders and scheduling to help ensure safe and timely care. Your work directly supports patient preparation and recovery through accurate testing, medication safety, clear documentation and thorough discharge education that extends care beyond the clinic walls. What you'll do
- Obtain patient history, record vital signs on admission, and assist to reassess clinical status after therapeutic interventions.
- Alert providers of urgent or life-threatening situations in a timely manner. Prioritize care needs and intervene in situations outside routine clinic protocol to ensure safe and timely escalation.
- Coordinate and document physician orders while anticipating and initiating indicated diagnostic testing based on established protocols.
- Monitor patient flow and adjust work efforts to maintain continuity of care and efficient departmental operations.
- Provide thorough discharge instructions, involve family when appropriate, and ensure referrals and community resources are offered.
- Perform waived laboratory tests according to protocol while maintaining competency in testing procedures and quality standards.
- Handle medications responsibly by following established safety practices and administering within scope and clinic guidelines.
- Assist with scheduling surgical procedures and ensure patients receive appropriate pre- and post-op instructions.
- Document visits, calls, refill requests, and related encounters accurately in Epic Ambulatory and assign facility charges correctly.
- Cross-train to support other clinic areas and adapt to changing patient flow to ensure consistent care delivery.
Required qualifications
- Certified Medical Assistant - Medical Assistant Certification, such as or equivalent to: CCMA (AAMA), CCMA (NHA), NCMA (NCCT), RMA (AMT), RMA (AAH), CMAC (AMCA), or NRCMA (NAHP).
Additional information
- Basic Life Support - within 30 days of hire.
- Preference will be given to candidates with experience in a surgery setting.
- The ideal candidate will be teachable, driven, utilize critical thinking skills and be proactive in support of patients and providers.
- Successful candidates will have strong communication and interpersonal skills to support effective, courteous, caring and professional interactions with patients and coworkers through all forms of communication.
- Proficiency in performing patient care tasks with the necessary visual, hearing, and manual dexterity required for safe clinical practice is essential.
- Applicants well aligned with this position will possess solid organizational abilities to manage tasks, workflow, and patient care responsibilities efficiently.
