Primary responsibility involves performance of specific tasks, as a scrub technologist in an operating room. Assists with the maintenance of surgical instruments, supplies and equipment. Maintains positive customer relations. Shall demonstrate competency and possess the technical skills appropriate for his/her assigned cases and utilizes that knowledge in assisting others. Performs various duties within his/her scope of responsibility and is accountable to the Clinical Nurse Manager of the Operating Room.

Qualifications

Minimum Required: High school diploma or GED. Preferred: Associate degree in Surgical Technology. | Certification as a surgical technologist highly recommended within two years of hire. | 0-6 months experience.

Checks table(s) for complete readiness for each procedure. Ensures all items needed for the cases are present:

Obtains physician’s special instruments and sutures prior to start of the case.

Ensures communication made to surgeon prior to the start of the case if any supplies and/or equipment are unavailable.

Demonstrates, maintains, identifies and corrects any break in aseptic technique while setting up the case as well as during the surgical procedure.

Demonstrates knowledge and dexterity in handling of special supplies and equipment and assures it’s proper functioning. Is knowledgeable of the specifics of the surgical procedure and able to perform these tasks in an organized and efficient manner.

Effectively communicates pertinent information to relief personnel so as to provide safe continuity of care.

Promotes an environment of cooperation and teamwork.

Attendance is prompt and regular.

Effectively communicates with all health team members in a timely and courteous manner.

Shares pertinent information with nursing manager.

Willing to share knowledge with others.

Under the surgeon’s supervision, assists with suctioning secretions, holding retractors, assisting with skin closure, cutting sutures and irrigating wounds.

Circulates for operative procedures under supervision of R.N.

Assists with patient care at the end of the surgical procedure.

Operative site is prepared.

Cleanses operative site.

Connects drainage tubes to appropriate devices.

Assists and/or applied sterile dressing.

Assists with patient transfer to bed/stretcher.

Covers soiled gloves with clean exam gloves.

Assists with transfer with adequate number of assistants present.

Responsible for knowing and using good body mechanics.

Processes case cart.

Disassembles table(s) contents and instruments, and places in proper receptacles for cleaning.

Thoroughly sprays dirty instruments in their containers prior to transport to SPD.

Sends (appropriate) instruments to CSR and/or clean up room for terminal cleaning.

Disposes of trash and linen appropriately.

Assists in expediting case turnaround time.

Assists with cleaning of tables, floors, etc.

Promotes safe environment for patient and all health care members.

Instruments, sharps and sponges are counted according to policy.

Identifies and transfers surgical specimens according to O.R. policy.

Performs safety check on all equipment (power instruments, etc.) for proper assembly, completeness and operation before it is used.

Correctly prepares and labels medications including dosages and percentages to be used during the case according to type of procedure to be done and/or doctor’s preference card.

Keeps operative field free of unused instruments, equipment, and sharps.

Receives instruments from surgeon.

Keeps instruments clean by wiping blood and tissue from instruments.

Removes unnecessary articles from the operative field.

Demonstrates professional behavior.

Recognizes benefits of learning from positive and negative experiences and integrates this knowledge into daily practice.

Serves as a role model.

Recognizes and acknowledges peer accomplishments.

About the Role The Certified Surgical Technologists is an allied health professional, who is an integral part of the team of medical practitioners providing surgical care to patients. The Certified Surgical Technologists work under the supervision of a surgeon to facilitate the safe and effective conduct of invasive surgical procedures, ensuring that the operating room environment is safe, that equipment functions properly, and that the operative procedure is conducted under conditions that maximize patient safety. The Certified Surgical Technologist shall possess expertise in the theory and application of sterile and aseptic technique and combine the knowledge of human anatomy, surgical procedures, and implementation tools and technologies to facilitate a physician's performance of invasive therapeutic and diagnostic procedures. POSITION’S ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES: The Certified Surgical Technologist handles the instruments, supplies, and equipment necessary during the surgical procedure. Understands the procedure being performed and anticipates the needs of the surgeon. Knowledge and ability to ensure quality patient care during the operative. procedure and is constantly on vigil for maintenance of the sterile field. Duties are as follows: STERILE PROCESSING DUTIES: Decontaminates and sterilizes instruments, medical supplies, and equipment, and assembles, wraps, and sterilizes trays of instruments. Follows proper Standard Precautions while in decontamination and sterilization areas. Monitors biological and chemical wash solution to ensure quality and consistency for decontamination of instruments and medical equipment. ROBOTIC DUTIES: Able to answer both clinical and technical questions about the da Vinci surgical system Tasked with plan for sustainable growth of the robotics program Serves as main point of contact Enables surgeon access and facilitates best in class case support experience Targets and supports new surgeons interested in surgical procedures using the da Vinci system Coordinates and attends regularly scheduled robotic Steering Committees and provides operations updates on the progression of the program Works to configure the operation room ® in a way that is efficient for the use of a da Vinci surgical system Works with materials management to order da Vinci surgical instruments and accessories as needed Maintains lean par levels of all da Vinci surgical instruments and accessories that should be in stock Creates a metric tracking system for robotic cases to set benchmarks and evaluates progress towards the goals in reduction of non-operative time and more efficient OR workflow Based off usage metrics based on instrument utilization data, determines where it makes sense to create trays and where instruments should be peeled back Works with surgeons and nursing staff to lean out preference cards and determine which standing orders are needed for all robotic assisted procedures Works with the OR manager or charge nurse to ensure operating rooms, designated for robotic-assisted surgical cases, are properly staffed Works with the nursing staff to ensure robotic rooms have all ancillary supplies needed for robotic surgeries performed with a da Vinci surgical system Establishes a training pathway for all new hires or those that will be working in the OR designated for robotic-assisted surgical procedures, including assigning online modules, providing an in-service on the da Vinci surgical system, and observing cases Establishes clinical competencies for all staff involved in robotic-assisted surgical procedures and explains guidelines for annual testing to ensure those competencies are met Educates the OR staff on updates or new products used within robotic-assisted surgical procedures Troubleshoots any issues with the da Vinci surgical system during surgical procedures Initiates RMA process for damaged instruments and scopes Assists as scrub nurse or First Assist at patient side during robotic-assisted surgical procedures if applicable Responsible for maintaining, updating, and collecting the daily wrap-up sheet Responsible for storing other da Vinci surgical system documentation in a centralized location or dedicated binder such as a Communication Binder. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS: 3 Years’ experience as a Surgical Technologist Preferred, or equivalent Military training. Two (2) years of experience as a surgical technologist and/or has demonstrated competency in two (2) or more specialty areas. Surgical Tech I - 10-hour Shifts - Marina del Rey Hospital

Responsibilities As a Surgical Technologist I, your main duties will involve: Performs first scrub role in basic surgical procedures. Prepares the operating room and the sterile field for surgical procedures. Pre-operative duties include performing a surgical scrub, donning OR attire and personal protective equipment (PPE). Prepares sterile supplies, instruments, and equipment using sterile technique. Confirms that instruments function properly and have been properly sterilized. Maintains the availability of instruments and supplies to avoid delays. Sets up the sterile back table and Mayo stand with instruments, supplies, equipment and medication/solutions needed for the procedure. Assists the team members with gowning and gloving, assists with the draping the patient and establishing the sterile field. Performs appropriate intraoperative count (instruments, sponges, needles), and labels all medication. Participates in the surgical site and patient verification during the “Time Out” process. Assists the surgeon by performing the following tasks at the sterile field: Passing supplies, equipment, or instruments, sponging, or suctioning at the operative site. Prepares and cuts suture material, transfers, but does not administer drugs within the sterile field. Handles specimen. Holds retractors and other instruments, manipulates the endoscopic camera or changes out robotic arms/instruments during endoscopic surgery, applies electrocautery to clamps on bleeders, connects drains to suction apparatus and applies dressings to closed wounds. Controls and maintains perioperative environments (i.e., asepsis, electrical safety, waste management, and traffic patterns). Establishes and maintains a sterile field. Maintains a safe, clean, and organized environment. Reduces the risk of health care-acquired infection by complying with current CDC hand washing guidelines. Demonstrates clinical competency and technical skills for general and special populations. Aware of patient needs while assisting the RN in implementing the plan of care for each patient. Assists the RN in prioritizing job duties, physician requests, and interdepartmental procedures as directed by RN. Demonstrates knowledge about the equipment used in assigned areas including the care, handling, operations, troubleshooting, and safety precautions. Recognizes malfunctions and initiates repairs appropriately. Assembles processes and maintains instruments relevant to the assigned area. Monitors and updates inventory within the area as assigned. Cleans and prepares instruments for sterilization on completion of the surgery. Assists in storing, stocking supplies, and updates surgeons’ preference lists as needed. Assists the surgical team with cleaning of the operating room on completion of the surgery. Reduces the risk of patient harm resulting from falls. Observes patients for the risk of falling and takes action to prevent patient falls. Improves the accuracy of patient identification: uses two identifiers when transporting patients between units/departments. Other duties as assigned. Primary Shift: 10-hour Shifts, variable start times plus call requirement.
