Summary:
Independently performs the functions of a registered nurse in direct patient care with any patient who has a trach. This position has acquired specific knowledge and understanding of the airway, specifically all trach care needs. This position works together with the patient, his or her family and healthcare team members. This position adheres to organizational policies and procedures regarding trach care. The position serves as an expert nurse, educator, and consultant and works alongside the multidisciplinary team to design and implement safe, timely, equitable, effective, patient-centered, evidence-based care strategies. This position plays a vital part in improving patient care and promoting superior patient outcomes in relation to trach care.
Responsibilities:
* Evaluate and follow up on all trach consult requests
* Serves as a content expert with multidisciplinary team members in the assessment, development, implementation and evaluation of the age-specific, individualized plan of care
* Completes all pre-trach education when PICU, CVICU, NICU or other service determines the next step for the patient is tracheostomy placement
* Assists individual families in knowledge and skill acquisition to safely care for patient upon discharge from hospital
* Provides post-trach care simulation training with families prior to being discharged
* Provides all trach education for inpatient and outpatient services across all campuses including new graduate RNs, school nurses, paramedics, clinics, community providers, and UTSW residents etc
* Weekly trach rounds on all inpatient tracheostomy patients
* Works collaboratively with trach team in updating all tracheostomy and airway education materials and policies for the organization
* Manage trach stock on D9 and contact for the organization concerning trach stock and supplies
* Identify, trend and evaluate airway and tracheostomy dashboards to support changes in the delivery of care that promote optimal clinical outcomes
How You’ll Be Successful:
WORK EXPERIENCE
* At least 1 year Experience with patients with a tracheostomy Required
* Pediatric experience Preferred
* Patient education-experience speaking with families on plan of care and teaching skills needed to care for patient Preferred
EDUCATION
* Four-year Bachelor's degree in Nursing BSN Required
LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS
* Current License to practice professional nursing in the state of Texas Upon Hire Required
* Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers as required by CP 1.20 Life Support Course Requirements Upon Hire Required
* PACES certification 180 Days Required
