Supports administrative and clinical requirements of physicians and other licensed medical staff. Assists in obtaining patient vital signs, updates patient’s charts, compiles related statistical data and policy/procedure/practice, regulatory requirements, and JCAHO standards. Responsible for administering care to clinic patients (adult patients, including the older adult through geriatric and pediatric patients, from newborn through adolescence) under the supervision of the physician and other licensed medical staff.MAJOR JOB FUNCTIONS:
The following is a summary of the major essential functions of the job.
Administrative duties
- Performs front-desk reception to include greeting patients and scheduling appointments .
- Maintains bookkeeping.
- Prepares correspondence and processes mail.
- Arranges outside referrals and hospital admissions.
- Maintains office inventory.
- Maintains medical records to include performing transcription.
- Files and codes insurance claims and processes patient billing.
- Performs computer skills.
- Communicates with patients and coworkers using appropriate lay or medical terminology.
Clinical Duties
- Interviews patients.
- Measures vital signs.
- Prepares patients for exams.
- Performs EKGs.
- Performs venipuncture and waived lab testing.
- Changes dressings, applies bandages.
- Assists with minor injuries.
- Calls to pharmacy prescriptions.
- Uses CPR when required.
- Performs patient education.
- Prepares and administers oral and injectable (intramuscular, intradermal, subcutaneous) medications with physician’s authorization.
- Performs accurate, legal, and ethical documentation at all times.
- Disposes of biohazard waste according to OSHA guidelines.
- Sterilizes instruments.
- Administers medications as directed by licensed medical staff.
General duties
- Participates in staff development, to include mandatory in-service and training.
- Attends department staff meetings.
- Follows infection control requirements.
- Fields telephone calls\messages for physicians and documents patient contacts as needed.
- Performs additional duties as required.
QUALIFICATIONS:
The following qualifications, or equivalent, are the minimum requirements necessary to perform the essential function of this job.
EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE:
High school graduate or GED. Graduation of an accredited Medical Assistant program with successful completion of a nationally recognized certification exam. Acceptable organizations are:
- CMA - American Association of Medical Assistants
- RMA - American Medical Technologists
- CMA(MEDCA) - Medical Career Assessments
- RMA(ARMA) - American Registry of Medical Assistants
- CMA - National Association for Health Professionals
- CCMA - National Healthcareer Association
- NRCMA - National Association for Health Professionals
- NCMA – National Center for Competency Testing
Basic Life Support (BLS) required from the American Heart Association.
Required Licenses and Certifications
